kdmac, you do NOT blather here. You are funny and wryly self-aware. A delight.
I, too, sometimes turn a blind eye to the "ahem-ing," weight-shifting and other subtle social clues when I've been too isolated for too long. But I laughed so hard reading your pumped-up tale of conversational hostage-taking. It reminded me of my late husband, who was bipolar, compulsively talkative and truly blind to those "let's wind it up" social cues.
Watching him corner people was spectator sport. In fact, I participated in said sport the day he died. After the poor victim's fifth attempt to get away, I walked up, slapped Jim on the shoulder -- hard -- and said, "Hey, let's get going." I slipped the poor cornered guy a sly smile, and I'll never forget the gratitude in his eyes. What a hoot.
