Is spring coming soon?

Postby Redetotry » Fri Feb 04, 2011 2:29 pm

I have a question for all the birders out there. I am starting to hear bird songs that I haven't heard since last spring. The question is, do the birds who winter over change their songs or stop singing or have new birds arrived?

This is not from a bird watcher but I believe the songs change with the seasons... They too have had a hard winter and are ready for spring...

Same here. I'm not a birder per say but have observed birds all my life. They know when the seasons are changing. The cyles of the seasons trigger them. Now the days are getting longer, the sun is getting warmer in the northern climes and very slowly but surely, they are starting to gather, to prepare for their return to their nesting grounds. It wll be awhile, but it will happen. Like those of us who smile and feel so good on a sunny winters day, the birds are singing their joy for the warmth of the sun and the coming of new life.

After a cold or rainy spell if the sun comes out they will sing. Makes them happy, too. It is part of their communication thing. They, the little warblers, haven't started migrating just yet. Won't be too long though. Every morning the Wrens in the back yard welcome us and ask for food by singing. When the sun came out a bit ago, the lesser goldfinches were singing their little hearts out. We are probably one of the few houses in this subdivision feeding and putting out water for them. Have to empty the water dishes every couple of hours as it freezes over. Everyone including the Cooper's Hawk has been in to eat - course he was looking for another bird - got a white-winged dove I think.

Lots of mating has started around here, but it is with the birds that mate early - hawks, owls, wood cocks. Liz had shots of Black Crowned Night Heron with a streamer on the back of his head - part of his nuptials prior to breeding. So some are prepping and getting ready, others haven't crossed the Gulf of Mexico yet...may 8-10 weeks out for them coming over.

That's my opinion and it is given free of charge and can be considered as worth nothing!!

Not much singing goes on during the winter but with warmer weather and longer days they start declaring their territories and singing for a mate.
