My son who lives in California and his wife are renting a motor home this summer for two weeks (Wed to Wed), so I am joining them for a few days as they travel around the Four Corners area. I am really looking forward to it, especially spending some time with my 5 year old grandson and 3 year old grandaughter, who barely knows me, poor thing. Main reason for the trip is the Durango-Silverton train since my son and grandson are nuts about trains. Also, my daughter-in-law is a Californian who has hardly every been out of the state, other than Tahoe, so she needs to see some of the country. My kids and i have always been travelers. In fact, I am game for just about anything, whether I can afford it or not.
This will be an interesting test to see how I like sleeping and traveling in one. I know the rental won't be as nice as one I would actually buy the way I wanted it, but I am looking forward to the experience. A bit worried about bedbugs, however, based on past discussions. (Luckily my other son will not be along because he is positively paranoid about the little insects, although I suppose he has some reason since he travels so much for business.)
My son will be doing all of the driving. I am flying into Albuquerque and spending a couple of days driving slowly past Canyon de Chelly and Monument Valley before meeting them in Page, Arizona. I'm taking my own bedding (old stuff that should be donated to Goodwill) on the plane and tossing it when I am done.
I had almost given up the idea of buying a motor home when I retire in two years, but the more I look at national parks out there, the more I keep thinking how nice it would be to be able to spend some time in various places. Now I am getting more enthusiastic.
Any suggestions of things to not miss in the Four Corners area? We are going to go to Mesa Verde, Durango, and back to Sedona, AZ. Skipping the Grand Canyon this trip because not enough time.
