Ranting on insurance!!!!

Postby retiredhappy » Mon Jan 17, 2011 8:47 pm

I've had my car and RV insurance with Allied Insurance for several years. No claims, no accidents, no tickets. I get my renewal notice on my car and THEY'VE GONE TO A SIX MONTH POLICY on the car only. That means they can raise the rates every six months instead of only once a year. It also means that when I take their 6mo policy ($362) times two my rates for a year have gone up almost $100 ($725). I DON'T THINK SO. Called my independent agent and asked her to shop me around. She finally gets back to me and says, "sorry, she can't find a yearly policy". One of the ones she listed was Hartford - said they wouldn't give her a quote so I go online thru AARP and actually talked to a person at Hartford and got a quote. For EXACTLY the same coverage they quoted me $692 less $23 for paying in full AND less 5% for taking AARP's online driver safety course which is good for three years - TOTAL PREMIUM $636.. Tomorrow I go online and take the safety course then call them with the course completion number and will have a new insurance company.

I HATE insurance companies!!!!!!!!!

I hate 'em too! But I'm pretty lucky as I can continue to use USAA which is reasonable and doesn't play games. I was, however, surprised to learn when I tried to insure Foo Foo that they (USAA) doesn't do RV insurance any more. They have contracted with Progressive now. My folks had their RV insured with USAA, but I couldn't get it with them. It's all a conspiracy to make money just like the big investment firms.

I have everything (2 cars, trailer, house) insured through AAA. Because of the close proximity of my townhouse to hills that could catch fire, very few places will insure me. I was actually dropped by Mercury 2 years after moving in here because of a big fire that got within about 5 miles of my complex.

I don't know if AAA is the cheapest, but in my limited experience with them they'e been extremely responsive and easy to work with. Had a guy back into me in a parking lot, causing about $1000 damage to my Explorer. They covered everything, including a rental car for the time mine was in the shop. And when I lost my awning on the hybrid they took care of that without argument also.

For that peace of mind I don't mind paying a few dollars more each year.

Hi all,

I'm wading my way into other areas of the forum & thought I'd drop a hello! I've been coming closer to finding my FIRST RV (I think, must be..I've sure been spending way too much time online ;-} ) and these posts about insurance remind me that I might want to be checking into rates even now before I've actually got one. I'm pretty much homing in on RT 190P & with encouragement & words of wisdom from Liz and my older sister who's on her 2nd RT, I'm trying to choose wisely.

My insurance is with AAA now & I'll see what they can estimate for me for a couple of models. Any suggestions about coverage for this new gal?? When I become an official owner, I'll post a photo. 'Til then, yall keep a good thought that I make a good decision in my first RV purchasing experience! I'm talking to a good number of both private owners and dealers, so I feel like I'm at least getting a fairly good education.

Hope everyone had a nice long weekend...I did :D :D , tomorrow it's back to the classroom ;) .

my insurance on my car is due to renew in February. The sent me the new figure, its gone
up almost $10 a month. Don't know why, but I suppose I should call my insurance guy. Its
progressive and I've been quite happy with them, but then who wouldn't be, I've made no
claims. For the address change they increased me by $1. I'm thinking all the insurance's
have gone up.

Ava, if you're a member of AARP, go online thru AARP and check out Hartford. You get a discount for being an AARP member.

I don't like them, either.

For years, I have always paid yearly, until last year. They started 6 month policy only. :x :x :x

I was really happy with AARP. Changed to another company that gave me better rates with more coverage for the rv - but the car is with AARP/Hartford. And when I had a claim with my rv - was with Hartford/AARP then and was very happy dealing with them.

Yep, hate how it all works, though.

My husband did extensive pricing research and found the AARP/Hartford insurance to be the most competitive pricing for our car and RV. I too had a claim with them and the experience was actually pleasant.

I have my house, truck and RV all insured with AAA. Been with them for 40 years and not a complaint at all. They have been very good when I have had to file claims and my rates are actually holding fairly steady. In fact, when I got my new truck, I thought my rate would be going up cause it was new, but nope it actually dropped a bit :) M agent said that I might qualifly for anther rate drop next month cause I have only filed one claim in 8 years (winsdshield hit by stone), so my record is good. The last time I filed, was for same thing. So I will see what I come up with when I renew next month. My RV's Roadside Assistance though is through Good Sam at the moment.

Karen, sorry to hear about Allied as I have my car insured with them. Progressive is my RV insurer and they just lowered my cost on that. I had my car with All State and it was just way outlandish and that was when I ended up with Allied. Guess I'll wait a month or so and see what transpires. Maybe I will go ahead and do the online drivers course. Been considering that for a while. Guess we all best keep safe driving and hope unsafe drivers don't find us....

The AARP on line driving course takes a full day altho you can stop and take breaks frequently. Its really simple and talks to you like you're about five years old but for 5% off my insurance, I'll grit my teeth and put up with it. Many insurance companies will give you a percentage off if you've taken the course and its good for three years.
