This has been nipping at the back of my thoughts all day.

I hope no one thinks I was giving a lecture on the subject! If it sounded that way I sincerely apologize!!! It honestly and truly wasn't meant that way.

VFD's are a soapbox for me because I was a vol firefighter and vol EMT for almost 15yrs until I moved out of NY. I've been on the receiving end of a thrown newspaper and tirade over "I'm not paying anymore money to you guys. I pay my taxes. And that should be enough"! I about bit my tongue off to keep my temper and mouth out of trouble. I politely thanked him and left. I swear 2 weeks later our VFD was at his house for a garage fire. He sent the fire dept a check for $500 as a donation the following month. :D ;)

So again if "I" offended anyone I'm sorry.

I live inside city limits and pay for these through my city income taxes but this thread made me wonder if the skyrocketing tax rates of all kinds would slow if more people actually had to per each time they used a government service? Just a thought...A pet peeve where I live is my garbage collection which is billed monthly with y water and sewer, which are based on usage. Garbage is a flat fee for everyone, regardless of how much or little trash you put out. I never have a full can and often only put it out half full every other week. Other people put out 2 or 3 cans each week and we all pay the same. The rate is set by a contract negotiated by the city every 3 years or so. We also have included curbside recycling service every week but no penalty if you choose not to do so. I bet if we paid by volume, more would recycle and all that stuff would not be going into landfills. You know the ones that no one wants in their backyard. Okay, I'll climb down now from my soapbox. lol
