Counting down the days

Postby Pookie » Wed Jan 05, 2011 10:32 am

Good morning girls,
Just want to take a moment to say that I am so happy to have found this forum full of awesome women who love the pace of this lifestyle but also the commoraderie of great friends. I love getting up each morning and reading the informative, sometimes crazy, encouraging, and/or touching posts here.

Just a little bit of my story: I worked for many years as an accounting clerk, as a single mother of 2. When I found (though I wasn't really searching) the love of my life 23 years ago, I was given the opportunity to work part time, finally able to relax a bit and enjoy life. My husband and I would have a blast taking our blended family of 6 on camping adventures.

In 1994, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis which somewhat limited my ability to get out there and really explore. I have been blessed in that the disease has not affected my ability to walk, etc. however, I have to really watch getting overheated or exerting myself too much.

As our children grew and reached adolescence, we unfortunately allowed life to get in the way, and we stopped camping.

When my husband and I became empty nesters in the last few years, the dream was re-ignited. We began tent camping in local state parks and it was as though we never left. We decided to purchase an RV and are so looking forward to beginning our adventures in 89 days! We dream of the day when he can retire and we can begin to venture out. Initially, we are planning on visiting local state parks and then, as we get the hang of it, maybe leave the state ;)

I am using this time to glean all the information and advice I can about getting a running start on this journey.

I am looking forward to getting to know all of you better in the days to come.

HI Pookie and welcome! When my late husband was diagnosed with cancer we sold our motorhome to a couple, the wife had MS. Her husband thought it would be the best way for them to travel because she could lay down and rest if necessary.

My biggest advice is take it easy....you don't need to rush from location to location....you aren't on a short-term vacation....take your time! When Stu (my current husband) and I started RVing together we were doing 350-450 mile days. That slowed to 250-300 and now we often only move 100-150 miles. We love sitting in one spot long enough to 1) get chores done and 2) get to really see the area.

I look forward to your stories of traveling!

It so cool that you've gotten yourself back in the lifestyle (in 89 days...)! ! ! Making your rig your own is so much fun - I actually miss that part of it (there ain't much you can do in a 13' box).

We anxiously await pictures and narrative of the beginning of your adventures. You do have a digital camera, right? If you have any trouble posting pics, just ask - we'll help you figure it out!

Welcome to the forum. What an exciting time of your life. Come join us often, either in person or on the forum. If you have any RV questions, ask away. We once did 4 pages on dumping and maintaining the black tank. Where else could a toilet garner so much interest??

Love learning more about you. I have a good friend, a cousin's wife and a former employee all with MS - it's not an easy disease, with many different stages, etc. You just keep doing what you can, and fight it with all your strength - and ENJOY your new adventures. (Yes, don't overheat or overtax yourself, tho).

AM moving this to your intro thread - as that's where we'll all look for this kind of information about you. No biggie, but we do go back and reread those thread sometimes - to remember things about people (yes, I forget LOTS).

Good morning Beth, other than the scathing article by the Courier Journal (of which I am so ashamed) how did you enjoy your time in Kentucky while at Amazon? Was the state park worth our checking out? Since we are new at the whole backing in, setting up camp with an RV thing, are the sites adequate for newbies do you think?

Did I read that you were in Alabama recently? We visited my mom-in-law in Fairhope in December and checking out some RV parks/resorts there. Whew, they are everywhere!! What area are you in?

Also, you seem to be the "go to" person for all things web related, when I start to photograph my travels, what is the best program to use for my pictures?

Sorry for all the inquiries, I am still learning how to search through posts for the answers. Please be patient with me :D

Hey yall back to a fellow Kentuckian! I just joined the forum myself and I'm in Stephen Foster-ville, so to speak. I think you'll really enjoy this forum...these ladies are a wealth of info and support! My biggest challenge so far is that I think I need a sabbatical from work so I can play more

Welcome Pookie,

Glad you joined us. Great group here. Lots of information and sharing and caring etc. I have a small Rockwood trailer, big enough for myself and my two furbabies. Am exploring around Michigan. Have lived in Michigan all my life and there aren't too many places I haven't been, but am now catching up on camping around the state. Mostly the northern lower and the Upper peninsula.

Hoping eventually eventually to branch out too and KY is one of the places I wold ilke to go. Been there a number of times and it's a beautiful state. Also want to go ut West too. Too many places and not enough time. :) But I'm going to look forward to hearing about your journeys and the Ky State Parks. Will give me some idea of where I might like to go.

Morning Saretta,
Thanks for the welcome and welcome to you! Thankfully, I don't work outside my home at the present, so I take my own sabbaticals . Find myself playing on this darn computer more than I should, but it seems to be therapy for me.

My husband and I have tent camped at My Old Kentucky Home a few times and enjoyed it. I noticed that you are in the market for an RV, have you RV'd before ? If so, I was just wondering if you have visited many areas in Kentucky that you can recommend.

I am excited about the upcoming RV show in Louisville....and looking forward to hearing of your travels, seeing pics and getting to know you.

Sue,
thanks for the welcome, nice to meet you. We are chomping at the bit to get out there, but I guess patience is a virtue :( .

Michigan is also a gorgeous state that we look forward to visiting. Can you tell me what time of the year it would be best to visit Northern Michigan? Southern?

I look forward to perusing your posts and learning all I can !
