Our Shopping Choices for the new 5er...

Postby rvgrammy1953 » Mon Jan 03, 2011 7:28 pm

I mentioned that we're shopping for a new 5er to purchase this coming summer. When Paulette and her GD, Ernie & I went to the Hershey RV Show , Ernie & I really liked the new Open Range products. So we've been researching online, visited some forums for Open Range, called the Company for special concerns, requested more brochures and watched alot of 360 virtual tours....and have narrowed it down to 2 of their 5ers......They are Open Range's Romer series 5th wheels: RF280RLS and RF287RLS. You can find them at www.openrangerv.com click on the photo marked Romer, then click the floorplans tab, then scroll down to the 5th wheels....

We like there is no wasted space, lots of storage space, and these floor plans fit our lifestyle....Big plus....NO MINI-BLINDS.... :D Curtains and shades.... :D

Go take a peek and let us know what cha' think....we really, really, like these....and our dealer in PA carries these...bet we go look-see again when we get back there... ;)

Not that I know ONE SINGLE THING about 5ers, but looking at the layouts, for just the two of us, I would prefer the one without the island.
They sure are beautiful!!
How fun is shopping for a new rig?

Like Mitch I would prefer it without a stationary island. But I sure do like the looks of the RF287. You could always pick up an island with casters so that it could be moved out of the way and hopefully the wheels would have locks on them! :D Also there really isn't much counter top to speak of in the RF280 between the fridge and stove.

I like the RF287 much better! hehehe

I like the 385rls, although I think its huge, I like it because of the L shaped kitchen, but thats
just me, because of a shape like that I can say "get OUT of the kitchen"

They both look very nice Lori, I'm sure you have your favorite. Just a couple of things I noticed, the one with the island has 3 slides, which will give you more room, but will you be able to get to the bathroom and to the fridge with the slides in, if you make a stop just to potty, fix a quick lunch or grab a drink? On the one with 2 slides, can you get thru the area where the sink is when that slide is closed? Oh, one more thing, I noticed in pic #11 that shows the stove slide, I don't know if I would be constantly stubbing my toe on that lip or have to stand further away from the stove than I normally do. I just got up and stood at my stove and my normal stance when I'm cooking puts my toe about 3 or 4 inches from the stove, just something to look at, I don't know if your 5er you have now has the stove on a slide or not, just looking at it as if I was buying, I'll mind my own business now.  They're BOTH purdy! :D

Since you asked, and only since you asked! My preference would be the 287. I wouldn't want the permanent island, either. And have a feeling it would block the actual kitchen with the slide in. BUT - if I was in one, might change my mind. Get what works best for the two of you. And I still love the one you have so much - lol - not sure I would want to trade it. (Kind of why I still have the one I do :) )

We've seen the island floorplan in a larger model....and they also have it without the island, but it has the movable island....the issue there is the weight....Our max is 10,500pounds.....Not in the market to buy a new truck and the Sultan loves his Tundra.... ;) .....I'm so enjoying all your comments and am making notes, especially about moving about inside with the slides in....right now we are able to go from the door to the bathroom when the slide is in....our stove is not in the slide, either....thanks for bringing this all to my attention.... :D ;) We also looked at the Open Range Romer and Journeyer TTs....but Ernie's worried about storage space available outside/basement....keep the comments coming...and thanks again....

I'll have you know that it's all your fault that I have wasted the past hour or so looking at TT's and tow ratings on trucks!

Gads I got to stop reading these kinds of posts! ~sigh~

They are both beauties. My preference is the 287 because I am such a slob. The floor between the island and the stove area of the 280 would be a danger to anyone walking in the kitchen area. There would be half a meal on the floor every time I cooked. But you have Spinner, the wonder dog, so he would probably keep the floor mopped, so to speak. One of the couples here at the cg have a 5er that has an island. She said when they stop for lunch or to overnight in a rest area that they must park where they can open the driver side slide. Otherwise they can't get into the kitchen or bathroom or bedroom. They didn't know that looking at the unit and it never occurred to them. So when they got it home, was tooooo late to do anything but live with it, which they are still doing. So make sure all the slides get operated in front of you before you get the check book out!!! Best of luck in your hunting and looking. Have lots of fun....gives you something to do in the bad weather.

I like the RF287RLS floor plan. I am not a fan of island kitchen.

Hmmmm? The jury is still out on that! And of course they are deciding whether to charge you with my hair loss too. Cause I pulled a bunch out!!!

Is this the dealer up on rt 15 north of Harrisburg? Can't for the life of me think of the name of that town. grrrrrr Ran that road often enough and used that little truck stop often enough you'd think I'd remember. grrrrrr ""CRS""

Yep!! I had the wrong route but that's the one I was thinking of. That's where you bought the one you have now, isn't it? Always wanted to stop there but never did.
It's on the right hand side of the highway as your going west on rt 322.
