Yes, Kindle is thru Amazon only. I found the prices are comparable, and the books, magazines etc are pretty much the same. I do wish there were more games to download as I love games.
The one feature the Kindle doesn't offer (at least the one I got), is the SD card, but that wasn't important to me as the Kindle can store up to 1500 books on it's own. Amazon has backup of all my purchases so I can retrieve them should I accidently delete a book or something happens to my reader.

Karen, I love that you can use yours for borrowing books at the library, too. That's great. And why whatever ereader I get will be able to do that - not be restrictive. Glad to hear you are happy with it.

I guess I am a total dork! I have not used an ereader and don't really know if it's possible to have one with my Verizon WiFi set up; that's all I have for my internet needs while traveling, a wee little netbook and Verizon. I just brought my new trailer home on Friday and have spent the last three days loading it up with the least amount of possessions. My divorce was final on November 30 and I am leaving all my beautiful things behind with my husband, glass/ceramic artwork, furniture, paintings,etc....doesn't seem to bother me too much as I am so ready to hit the road. BUT!!!!!! I loaded as many books in to my trailer as I possibly could get away with ...what a trauma to have to decide which ones to leave behind. I inherited my mothers amazing library and there are so many wonderful books to read. I only took about 50. I averaged it out at 1.5 lbs per book so that's only 75 lbs of books, so that's not too bad. I don't know if I could ever convert to a device as opposed to the quiet times with a book, a couch, feet up and a cup of tea.

You'd be amazed how much the ereader can feel like a book - and lighter than a hardcover. I have trouble with those now sometimes. Darn wrists and fingers! I'm trying to wean myself OFF real books, but probably never will entirely.

That said, the ereader is totally separate from your computer - you don't need a computer or computer connection for most of them at all.

My Libre downloads books thru my computer. I love my reader and as Beth says, its lighter than a hardback and easier to hold if laying down.

I do have to admit that lying down in bed, on your side trying to read a book to fall asleep by is so difficult. You have to prop the book on pillows and it never matches the angle of your head, and it continues to go vertical....so an ereader would sure be great for that. Mine would have to have a timed shutoff or it will be on all night when I fall asleep after one paragraph.

So, looks like I need to investigate this new lil device...I have spent soooo much money lately I am starting to tighten up; getting a bit shell-shocked watchingall the money fly out of my wallet.

I heard today that Google has entered the eBook market and will provide books for all formats except Kindle. Wonder how long Amazon can hold out on with this position for Kindle?

kdmac, wait until after Christmas or later....prices are dropping. With my Kobo, I download to the computer and then to the ereader. I also read ebooks on my computer using readers from Barnes and Noble, and Borders. Also use Adobe for reading the 'pdf locked' books. Still have paper books and listen to books on tape and CD.

Research the types of ereaders based on what it can read for you. e.g. pdf, html, text, etc. Read horizontal or landscape or both. Then add in the wireless part and see what might work for you. It really is easier to tuck that under your pillow and a 2" paper book  . My Kobo will power off after a period of no action.
