Oh, Dear - Do I Slash My Wrists?

Postby mitch5252 » Thu Dec 02, 2010 12:16 am

..

So, some of you know I'm in a dark place lately - among other serious health issues with other loved ones, the most loving and perfect man for me, my husband of almost 40 years, an insulin dependent diabetic, is being consumed by Alzheimer's Disease. We're taking life - together - one day at a time - there is no option. However, tonight may just have been the final insult...

We play a game at night. I take The Little Beast out to go potty. She and I go out the front door. I turn on the big porch lights...and walk over to the edge of the porch and wave and jump up and down to G in his Man Cave. He waves back and smiles. It's silly. Makes me smile.

Image

Tonight, however, I went to wave and he was slack jawed. Took The Beast in and went to the Man Cave to make sure all was right with the world. I stood for a while to make sure his chest moved up and down. Yep. Walked into the room to touch his forehead for the telltale sign of insulin overdose - not a "for sure" method...lucidity is more accurate. No sweat dripping off his forehead.

"What's your name?" I ask. Eyes roll (remember, I woke him from a deep sleep). "George."

"George who?"

"George Douglas."

"Who am I?"

"Nancy Pelosi."
So, do I slash my wrists, or his?
Aw, hell...just pour me another glass of wine.

My mom had alzheimers (and a brittle diabetic). Some of the things she came up with, I didn't know if I should laugh or cry! I guess I wanted to cry at the time, but now I can look back and laugh. It really isn't funny at the time tho. Very scary and sad... sorry you are having to deal with this :( .

Aw Mitch - I think George has such a great sense of humor. I hope that you and he can keep that throughout all of this. And I sure hope he doesn't want Nancy Pelosi to move in :)

Mitch, think the glass of wine was a great idea. We're going thru the same think with my MIL and we try to keep our sense of humor also, when she struggles with who is who, and other memory losses. Some of the things she comes up with---- But dang, George could have said Marilyn Monroe  Keeping you in my thoughts (((( )))). carold

How well I know how you feel.....and like you, I wondered whether to laugh or cry..... but you have been so supportive of me lately because of my Mom and her Alzaheimer's, I'm here to do both with ya'..... ;) So go ahead and have that glass of wine....and I have found it's better to laugh...cause crying just makes your eyes puffy..... ;) Love George's sense of humor....

   Better than a silly smile. George still has a great sense of humor. Bet that's what made you fall in love with him. (((hugs))) Although I didn't deal with Alzheimer's, I've been there with looking for the chest to rise and fall...we're here for you.

Mitch - don't slash your wrists! Ask him again in a few hours and you could be Marilyn Monroe!

I empathize with you as I have my almost 92 year old mother who also has Alzheimer's living with me. We find little to laugh about since she DOES NOT want to be here in Florida with me and none of her other kids (4) can or will take her in. We have little in common since I left home 50 years ago and only went back for brief visits. Still it is difficult to see the changes in her as each day goes by.

My heart goes out to you and I send lots of hugs for both you and George. (((((((((( :) )))))))))

Mitch, other than Lou Gherig's Disease, I don't think there is a more cruel human afliction than Alzheimer's. Watching the fine-tuned connections of the human brain disintegrate is both terrifying and stupefying. The only plus with Alzheimer's is that the aflicted ones usually fare better than those taking care of them. When they can be in their own little private 'spot'---believing they are someone else and somewhere else----they can be quite happy, and can behave in very silly manners. It's how we, as caretakers, interpret that behavior that can be so devastating.

Hang in there, and don't be afraid to keep us updated. Find the humor (and I KNOW you have an abundance of that!) in the daily happenings and responses that George will demonstrate! Laughing is the only way to get through and to actually enjoy this falling apart phase of life.

And, as others have said, keep Pelosi at bay, please!

Hugs to both you and George.

Dang Girl! The least he could have said was Dolly Parton or Ann Margaret or someone with boobs and hair....but Nancy Pelosi???? That one deserved a gentile loving slap upside the head! Leave it to George to add a little "George humor" after he scared you to death. I know that feeling of heart in throat fear when you're looking to see if someone's still breathing and it ain't fun...you deserve the whole bottle of wine, not just a glass....Hugs to you my friend.

Mitch, please don't slash your wrists, would be another win for Pelosi, and I agree what an insult, but maybe he felt not in a good humor, after all you did wake him up from a deep sleep, good pay back for that in my book !!!

We're all here for you, especially those of us, who have had to deal with your situation. One day at a time !!!

That glass of wine sounded like a great idea also, :)
