Dumb Turkey Question

Postby mitch5252 » Thu Nov 25, 2010 1:15 pm

..

I have NEVER used the organs/neck that are stuffed in a plastic bag in the turkey's butt.
But this year, I decided to use them in the dressing.

The neck and heart - got that! :D

What's the other stuff? There are 4 other "things" that I can't identify...
(I know one is the liver, but don't know which one.)
(I can take a pic, if needed...)

The liver is flat; the gizzard is two lumpy sections.

use the giblet for the gravy ie put in water or stock simmer for a while and use that for the gravy usually need for juice for the gravy then in the turkey pan
toss the liver :D
and if there is a neck bone in there use that for your stock water as well
never use the heart either

Three o'clock looks like the heart. I say just cook (boil) them all up and then chop for your stuffing. Or...when in doubt throw it out

Or give them a little at a time to your sweet doggie.

My mom liked them - but the rest of us didn't. She would boil them and use the flavored water for stuffing, gravy, etc as possible. We could live with that. Me, I do what you did - toss them immediately lol

OMG! When I was younger we all use to fight over them after they were cooked in the bottom of the roaster right along with the turkey. Mom always got the neck it's some of the tenderest sweetest meat. We didn't want it as us kids thought it to much work to get the meat off the bones. We all wanted the liver but then we all loved and ate liver and onions. Well my oldest brother wasn't so wild about it!

After we all grew up and moved out, if the Parents cooked a turkey, Dad would take the giblets and use them for the stuffing. After I got married my Mom would 'share' the neck with my husband. My husband would eat the 'tail' and it was all his. No one else wanted it! He was a down home country boy.

I still cook up the giblets and now I "have" to share the liver with Shade! Shade loves liver!

It's easier to identify them before they are cooked. I'd say it's the gizzard at 12 liver at 6. I think that is the heart about 4...and I have no idea what is at 1 and 10. Usually you just have the three things. Radar loves the liver....we just don't like to be around her after she eats it.
My mind works like lightning...one brilliant flash and it's gone.
