What is this ????

When I bought my RV it was set up for towing a jeep by the sellers. Not knowing anything about RV's at all, I didn't pay much attention. Thought for me...having never driven an RV that alone would be a challenge just to get it back to Calif. from Oklahoma. However, the other day I placed an ad on Craig's List to sell the Reese 5th wheel hitch that I had from the 5th wheel we towed (when I was married). Anyhow, I thought I had all the parts together as I had a buyer almost immediately. When I brought all of them out (nuts, bolts, etc.), the buyer said that this piece wasn't part of the 5th wheel hitch, but he'd take it if I didn't want it. Trying to remember 6 years ago, I just couldn't think clearly, but kind of remembered that this just might be part of the hitch used by the sellers when they towed their Jeep. Anyhow, I seem to remember that because it was so HEAVY that I took it out of the Born Free as I knew I wouldn't be towing. So, as there are so many of you Ladies that do tow...was wondering if you can identify this piece....Is it something I need to tow, (if I ever get that confidence) or just what is it???? Sorry this is so long but thanks for any info any of you can provide....

that is a hitch, the square part slides into the square on the hitch of a bumper in
the middle and then the long part with the little hole in the end is where you
put a ball.

Yes, Ava is correct, that's what it is, it slides into the receiver.

Thank you so very much....There is a 'square receiver' on the rear of the RV....so I was right in keeping it....that is, just in case I ever change my mind about towing...I really appreciate your replies...thanks again...(sure glad I didn't give it away..... )

When in doubt, keep it JUST IN CASE you might need it in the future/

Yep, that's a "drop hitch" that slides into the square receiver. Hitches come in various amounts of "drop" to accommodate whatever you're towing so it is level and parallel to the road therefore maintaining a smooth, trouble-free tow plus the proper wear on tires. A good thing to keep just in case it's the right one for your need, may not be, but good to keep in case it is. When you see trailers being towed that are high in the front and low in the back and look so silly going down the road that's because they are not using the correct "drop hitch" for their setup and that puts stress on several areas.
