A Very Scary Event -- Update

Postby Forestgal » Fri Oct 22, 2010 8:06 pm

Hey everyone --

Well, I may just have experienced what could be a long road with Jed. It appears that he may have had a seizure. After last year's scare with strychnine (yes, it's been a whole year) and him totally recovering from that, out of the blue he had something that sure looked like a seizure. The weird part was that after he came out of it he was absolutely fine. And before it he ran out into his run, heaved, then came back and seized (or whatever it was). Well, the hyper-vigilant mother in me called the 24 hour vet (30 mi. from home) and talked to the neurology intern who agreed that I could just monitor him for the time being.

I'm a nervous wreck. I don't do sick animals well, and it seems like I can't get through October without some sort of animal-related calamity happening. It completely un-does me.

Please pray or say a good word for my 4-legged boy. He's my life, and I don't know what I'd do without him. I'm just going to pray that it was an isolated incident and that it'll never happen again. But that little voice in the back of my head says that it's the beginning of some not-so-fun times to come.

Thanks for listening.

Laura -- and Jed

With is throwing up first, it sounds like he may have gotten into something. That said, I lived with seizures with both Tips and Moxie - Moxie for about a year and a half before she died, Tips the few months. Both were old and they were part of old age for them. Although Tips also had seizures as a puppy. No matter the reason, or why - they are absolutely no fun - and yes, I hope that it was an isolated case for Jed. I know how difficult it is for you and hope all goes well now. Please keep us informed - and I'll be thinking of both of you.

Fingers crossed for Jed. My Buddy has rare seizures. Last one was a year ago. He doesn't throw up first, just starts stiffening up and shaking. Last time he wet during the seizure. Afterwards he's fine and they only last a short time (around a minute) but it seems like they go on forever. Vet said he may have mild epilepsy but no meds unless the seizures become more frequent. They scare the hell out of me. Please keep us posted on him. Will definitely put him in my prayers.

So sorry to hear about Jed's new health scare. I hope it was a rare event and it won't happen again.
Take care and try not to worry, dogs can sense when we're stressed and they can become stressed so try to relax for the both of your sakes.
Give Jed a big old squeeze from me.

Poor Jed, he's been thru so much, hard to believe it's been a year, but that year of good health may help him get thru this. I'm glad it didn't happen right after the poisoning, don't know if his body could have handled it. But now he's strong and hopefully it was just a one time thing from something he ate or a reaction to something, whatever the reason, we don't want any more!!!

Awwww poor Jed and poor Mom! Hopefully it's just an isolated incident and nothing serious. Hugs to you both. That's what we're here for, big shoulders and caring thoughts. Keep us posted, Laura.

I am so sorry to hear Jed is having more problems. I know this is very scary. Will keep Jed in my prayers. Hope this is a one time incident and not something ongoing.

I too hope it was just isolated. I had a collie who had seizures from the time she was a pup but she lived 8 years and finally died from cancer. My favorite dog and I still miss her. Maybe cause I raised her from a pup and we did everything together. Hopefully he just got into something. This time of year there are a lot of tempting things out theree and if you live around people and your dog is roaming, antifreeze is a big thing to watch for in fall, when folks use it in their cars etc.

Seizures have always been one medical problem that always terrify me, and I can certainly know how you feel. They cause behaviors that are just "not normal" and are downright terrifying. My little Yoda dog, the one I had when I first got Molly, began to have seizures as a result of heart/circulation problems at the end of her long life, and I will never forget the terror I experienced when this would happen.

I am so hoping that maybe Jed, as Beth suggested, ate something that made him totally nauseated, violently sick, and somewhat confused so that his brain shortwired for bit. Please try not to worry (HAH---I know exactly how idiotic this advice is as I write it!) until when/if you find that this is not just an isolated event, or a long-time throwback to the strychnine seizures of a year ago. The meds he took back then worked for him, so, if this should be a recurring event, he could always go back on milder doses of those meds to keep him straight.

Hugs and love to both of you from me and Molly, and keep us updated on Jed, please.

Well, we're up and acting like yesterday's scare was just a bad dream.

As I think back, the first thing I thought of when I saw Jed racing around the house was that we were going to have an earthquake. His tail was tucked between his legs and he couldn't get away from whatever it was that he had just thrown up. So he definitely wasn't acting like a dog that was going to have a seizure.

Anyway, we're all okay. He's lying beside me chewing on his Kong bone, having just had his breakfast.

The thing that wigs me out is that for the past 6-7 years something has happened to my pets every Fall. I don't seem to be able to get through October without some horrible nightmare happening.

I'd just like to have a boring, uneventful October.

Thanks for your prayers and concerns, friends. I know that's what pulled Jed through last year, and it'll help again.
