Just wanted to post a quick comment. As someone born & raised in the Chicago area, at a young age I had the opportunity to move to Calif. leaving family & friends behind. Never much wanted to travel into the southern part of our great country & being young & just trying to build a life didn't think much about history or how our country was formed.
Now as I am single & retired, when I do my RVing, it's pretty much all around the west coast which I love because there is so much beauty here. (Remember, there's not much 'beauty' in the area I grew up in...especially being as poor as my family was & living in a small suburb of Chicago).
Anyhow, seeing all that Liz has posted of her travels & shared with this forum has just opened my eyes to how much I have missed. How beautiful the South is for one, & all the brave & courageous people that helped form this country & the struggles they endured. Of course, I've always taken this all for granted, not stopping to think of how lucky/blessed I am to be a native of this land. So, thank you Liz, for taking the time to teach me a grand history lesson & the awesome tours you share of this most beautiful country. At my age & limited income, I don't think I'll be able to travel personally to see some of the wonders you've visited....but thanks to you I can visit these places through your eyes, comments & pictures. I am so very, very grateful to you. Thank you so much.

I feel the same way about the history lessons we get from Liz. She can surly find the roads less traveled. Going on my last trip through the Blue Ridge area of Virginia I was wondering how in the world people managed to settle that area. And the battles that were fought, how did they find each other to fight.

The Blue Ridge Parkway was built in the 1930 by the CCC and what a job that must have been. Thank goodness we had a President that had the vision to do these things. The self serving bunch we have in government now will never accomplish anything like that.

Interesting that you brought up the CCC's Martha. My Dad (born in Wisconsin) joined the CCC's as a young man....traveled West & fought forest fires, built camping areas (the brick firepits, pit-toilets, roads, etc.), & worked as a 'Powder Monkey' on the Hoover Dam (& the dead buried there that no books tell the truth about)....Some of the stories he told about what went on in San Francisco's Barbary (spelling ?) Coast & the so-called movie stars in Hollywood (the good & the absolutely awful, Joan Crawford being one of the worst), the deserts & the poor back then in the midwest....My Mom never having left Illinois back then, and I would just sit at our kitchen table mesmorized by his stories...The CCC's kept many a young man from starving...And you're right....our present day politician's can't hold a candle to some of the great ones we've had in the past......

Thank you, Excel. I have found beauty & history in every state...bet you could even find it in the suburbs of Chicago, lol. I too am retired with limited income....I just travel frugally. How did I miss meeting you in No. Cal. this summer?

Liz....I'm in the San Jose area....Did not know you were anywhere near me....Thought I followed your travels thoroughly. If I missed you being close to my area...I'm terribly disappointed with myself. Went on a Rally with my Born Free club to the Grand Canyon, but otherwise have not left for any other RV trip....that was in May & June. So very sorry if I missed you....
