Me and My Scamp

Come on in and say hello.

Me and My Scamp

Postby Deonne » Sat Sep 04, 2010 9:20 am

Hello RVing women,

I'm so glad to have found you! I'm about to pick up my brand new Scamp (a 13-footer) and in October will start a year (or more) of solo road travel. I live in Taos, New Mexico, but am from California, so the Scamp's maiden voyage will cover that gorgeous state. I'll be starting a new blog (I'll announce it when it's live) to document my journeys, but for now I blog at http://www.lifeonthehighwire.com. Feel free to stop by and say hello.

I tried posting an avatar to my profile, but alas, couldn't. I used mediafire, but the profile page didn't recognize the link. I'm sure it's user error - ha - so if anyone has any tips, I'd love to hear them.

I was reading the comments about Passport America, and the consensus seems to be that it's worth it. The campground options seem a bit limited, but since I'll be all over the country it's probably worth it to get one. Any dissenters, please speak up.

That's enough for now. I look forward to getting to know you all better!

Welcome Deonne. You live in a beautiful area. I look forward to reading and seeing photos of your travels with your new Scamp!

As for Passport America, I think it is an individual choice, and depends largely on the type of traveling and camping you want to do. I camp mostly in National Park, National Forest, or Corps of Engineer Parks when I travel, so PA membership would not be worth it for me. For others it is the best way to go.

Welcome, Deonne, Glad to have you with us.

As to Passport America - I have been a member all my years of full-timing. I prefer boondocking and federal lands, etc - but when I need hookups and laundry to be done, etc, I look for a PA park. It only takes me using them once or twice to make back the annual membership. I'll be using them for our gtg in Branson later this month and that'll more than pay for it's membership.

Welcome, welcome. This is a great bunch of knowledgeable women. As for posting pictures check out the Technical section. We love pictures. We're having a big GTG (get together) in Arkansas and you're welcome to join us. Then several of us are off to Branson for a week.

Welcome aboard...the Scamps (and Casitas) are so compact. I have always admired them. Enjoy your adventures and be sure to let us know what part of the country your are heading to. You can always PM any of us the the projected area. We love gtgs even if it is only two rigs!

WELCOME DEONNE!

I think you will love your new SCAMP! I have a friend who brought hers up here last year for my annual GTG, and we all fell in love with it! It's a perfect way to learn how to haul, back up, park, and do all that stuff I still can't do with my Hideout!

Hope to see some pics when you learn how to post them! You will love this group!

Welcome Deonne! I walked thru several Scamps at the MN State Fair last week. They even had a small 5th wheel that was adorable!

Do you have any pets traveling with you? When will you be in California? Linda (Bikerchic) and I will be heading to Palm Springs, California on October 4th for the winter (me, permanently). Maybe we could meet up somewhere!
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

One more comment from me - you mentioned starting a year or more of travel. I did that exact thing - planning a year and a half of travel - that was in 2005 and I haven't stopped. If you like it as much as me - you never will either.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome! I do need to figure out how to post pictures, so I'll email the webmaster/moderator. (The FAQ instructions didn't help, which is strange, since I'm relatively tech-savvy.)

Thanks for the feedback on Passport America. Like Liz, I'll probably camp mostly in parks, but the PA is only $44/year, so I'll buy one and see how much I use it. If I don't use it enough, I won't renew.

I don't think I can make the Arkansas gtg, but I may be in SoCal early October. BarbaraRose and Linda, let's talk about connecting there. (I don't have pets - I'm about as unencumbered as you can get.)

Bethers - your story is interesting (and inspiring!). I'm a currently-underemployed writer and am not sure how I'll finance more than a year, but I've never had a problem finding work, so I'm hopeful. My plan is to build a platform with the new blog, and pitch articles based on that, eventually maybe get a book out of it. (That's a longer conversation, ha.)

So happy to meet you all!

Let me suggest if you have problems with the pictures, you post the questions to the tech thread about posting pictures. Lots more people will have the opportunity to get the answers for you. If you send an email to the board - that's just me. Lots will be willing to figure out where the problem lies. It always seems to be confusing the first time - then after a few times posting pics, it gets so easy you wonder why you were confused :)

You can write anywhere - and maybe will get inspiration from your travels! I have a very small internet business and workamp part of most years to continue to support doing this. I also live very frugally. I've come to love boondocking. And I rarely eat out. But I don't skimp when it comes to doing the tours and things that I want to while traveling. That would negate the point. But I make sure it's something I really want to do - not something everyone else says I should want to do. (If that makes sense.)
