Missing mom?

Postby kelpie » Sun Aug 22, 2010 7:45 pm

My 71 year old mother and her 80 something year old companion are traveling from FL to NY in their MH. It is her custom to be very vague about her itinerary and time frames but she was in VA last Tuesday. She told my sis in NY that they were waiting on a part which was supposed to arrive on Wed. She also said they drive 2 days, then rest 1 so we expected them to be in NY by Fri. None of us have heard anything from them, her cell phone is going to voice mail. We don't know if they are in trouble or just taking their time and may be somewhere without cellular service. If they are in trouble, we don't know who to call and have very little specific info to give anyway. Any suggestions?

When in doubt, I think you contact the State Highway Patrol and give them the information.....ask them to keep an eye out for them...... better safe than sorry.

You can try calling the highway patrol in the states she's expected to pass through. Give them a description of the rv & tell them what you told us. If they see the vehicle on the road, they will stop them for a well-being check.

And I'll keep them in my thoughts - hope they are just touring somewhere and not feeling the need to be communicative.

Do you have any information on the shop where they were expecting the part to come in? Even if you knew the town you could call and find an rv shop there and see if they got the part, when they left and if they said where they were headed.

Call the highway patrol in the state you last knew they were in. I once had my daughter located because she forgot to check in with me for two days while on a trip. She was pulling a horse trailer and was NOT happy when the highway patrol pulled her over and told her to call her mother.

No other suggestions than these but wanted you to know that they're in my thoughts as you are. Keep us posted, please.

I think the only thing you can do is call the State Patrol. If you have any idea..they also might be able to locate the cell phone, depending on the kind. The other thing maybe you could post on here and RV net..and the RV community could keep an eye out..see if anyone spots them in a RV park along the way. If you know maybe some of the places they have been?? Maybe you could look at map and see what route they might have taken.
What about contacting radio/tv stations..maybe they could put out...Have you see this motorhome and persons??

I also think it is very selfish not to give an itinerary of planned travels. This is one area I would have that Type A personality. When we take trips...my mom, my sister and my brother all get an itinerary. I leave one posted for my housesitters and the neighbor gets one. It lists our travel route and any campgrounds where reservations have been made. I do it so if something was to happen either to us or to someone in my family..we could be notified. IE: In glacier we have spotty cell coverage, but my everyone knew what campground we were at and what the phone # was.

I will pray that they are found safe.

Here's hoping they are located today....please keep us updated when you hear from them. It's a lesson to me to always remember to set an itinerary from day to day, and always remember to call someone.

No one has my itinerary - including me most of the time - as I never know where I'll end up one night to the next. Everyone knows that I will check in occasionally. So, if I'm selfish, sobeit. That's one reason I started my blog - but everyone also knows I can stop somewhere without service for several days - but will post again as soon as I have it - even if just to say I'm ok. I guess for those going on a vacation where you only have limited time, you have a regular itinerary - I haven't had one for over 5 years now. Hopefully nothing serious happens to me - but should it - my family and friends know that I'm doing what I love ...

I applaud the way Kellie's mom and friend are traveling - BUT - they need to check in - that I agree with. And Kellie, yes, please, keep us aware of what you learn. We are all concerned.

Sorry...I reworded that sentence and left out the part that include.." or contact people on a regular basis/check in. Our situation is we normally have all the plans laid out ahead of time. We do not always have all the Stops, but we do have the general route that we are taking. I think my thought comes from all the search and rescue/ LE background I was raised around and worked in. I just let people know. Even if we take short trips..someone knows where we are headed. In part it comes from seeing the other side so many times..of someone walking into the office and saying " MY dh and Ds went hiking somewhere and they were do back this afternoon and they have not returned? You have 100 plus miles of trail systems and they have no idea what trail they took, the area or nothing.
