Just checking in

Postby avalen » Fri Aug 13, 2010 8:44 pm

remember me? seems like its been forever but hasn't it only been a week?
Got the first week down at the good old school district, and the schedules were totally
hectick (how do ya spell that?) I did fine but lots of new drivers and over crowded buses,
kids on the wrong bus, the whole routine. I gotta say, I put in 45 hours for the week, but
I know that won't happen again cause they don't like anyone to get over 40, but my schedule
will give me about 38 and then of course when I have to update my paperwork I'll be able to
get that 40 hours. I'm so happy :D
Course I'll be happier when I can keep up on everyones fun on my own computer but thats
a couple weeks away yet, and thanks for all the pm's I miss you all too.
Its still hot in the desert, and no rain. But I did see some flooding on the news in Iowa, or
was it Ohio? Hope all our forum sistahs are safe.
So, bought a little bottle of wine and I'm gonna kick back and enjoy, (after I get back home
of course)
Cruising through a few posts and will try to get over here over the weekend to do some more
catching up, I'm so far behind on Liz's trips I'm getting jetlag just from trying to read them.
She was still in the PNW last I checked and now she's in Arkansas?
Enjoy your evening and everyone be safe.

Glad to hear from you - and to know your first week of the new year went ok - at least you know you'll be getting your full 40 hours every week. That's good news. Knew you were without your computer - so waited patiently to hear from you. Thanks for coming by - and can't wait till you're back regularly!

Good to hear from you , Ava! I'm sure the first week back is always like that. I'm sure it smoothes out, though...as smooth as it can with kids ;)

Missed you Ava but understood the excitement of the first week back. Not being a bus driver I got to watch the buses pull in those first days with the "what was the front office thinking" sort of reaction from some of the drivers regarding the routes. And those parents calling at 5 pm asking were little Susie was.....on the bus somewhere  Hope the gliches have all been ironed out the pick up points shifted to accommodate real time and numbers (as in where did all those kids come from)....and may all your students be ready and waiting in the morning and their parents/caregivers ready/waiting for your arrival in the afternoon. For many years I was the administrator that got the call, "Fred's caregiver was not there to receiving him. :? ) The once a year goof up was usually not a problem, child road the route and we tried again at the end of the route. On the families that had real issues, one in particular, we called Children Services. So that the family would not take advantage of the kind nature of the worried driver and the system...... :) I'm sure you have had your own exerience with one or two of those families!

Enjoy the 38+ hours. Will you be able to pick up field trips if they take you past 40?

Hi Ava and all...I am back at school too and I guess all districts are going through the same scheduling/run problems...goes along with the territory. We are a smaller school (650 students) and only have 4 buses, so we don't have too many problems. We had 3 more "units" (classes) added to our school so that is good news, as others have lost some and then teachers have to be reassigned to other schools. New class size reductions will be interesting to deal with this year. Our teachers come back Monday and the kiddies next Tuesday. There is something to be said for "routines"....hope everyone is doing well....chat soon :D

the district doesn't like us to get overtime, and since I went special ed this year, no field trips unless
its a special ed trip but then if I don't have the hours to put in for a field trip there wouldn't be any
for me anyway, not too many field trips only go for 2 hours, so IF there was a field trip it would only
be because they were desperate and couldn't find anyone else to do it.
And of course we couldn't get through the first week without one driver creasing a car on a turn. I
expect to hear about a lot more accidents this year then ever before cause of the way they restructured
the routes and the school bell times this year. Buses are totally full and only two bell times with not
enough time to get the kids picked up and to school before the bell rings. Drivers are extremely stressed.
Ok, enough rambling, gotta go do some more posts.

Tina made me remember something that happened when my DD was little. She took the bus to and from school in 29 Palms, CA (where I'm going this winter, basically). I think she was in Kindergarten and used to a nap so she fell asleep on the bus one day and didn't get off at her stop :o I was there to meet here so it was very upsetting to not see my little girl get off the bus. I thought she must have gotten on the wrong bus so I called the school or bus barn or something. The driver checked her bus and found her asleep in the back of her bus :o It never happened again...thank God!!!
