Days 4 & 5 at the PA GTG...

Postby rvgrammy1953 » Fri Jul 30, 2010 6:58 am

Well, darn it  ...Had no signal for 2 days so couldn't make a report to you all.... But Ernie worked very hard and go this up and going again.... ;)
Could be the heat and humidity were a factor, but who knows.....Anyway, here's the scoop on Weds. and Thurs....

Day 4: Found Paulette and me traveling into Gettysburg with Margie & Pam... :D (After I dropped the GD off with her Mommy.) Margie gave us informative, detailed and enjoyable tour of the battlefield.....Alot of interesting facts such as Corps HQ locations, and who was where when.....We visited the new Visitor Center.....It's really nice, as buildings go, but they now charge for everything that use to be free, such as the museum, but we did visit the gift shop and took photos in the big lobby....Of course, we took photos when ever we stopped on the battlefield.....Had lunch at the Pike restaurant....did a little more touring...then came back to the campground. Later in the day, just about supper time, Pat and her EX arrived..Got them all settled in...We did our "Howdys" and I presented Pat with her GTG Gift....then proceeded with eating, having a little wine, and chatting until almost dark.

Day 5: We stayed put most of the day....I had to do some wash, Ernie had to mow a couple more yards, and the gang wanted to catch up on some sleep....Besides, it was really humid and looked like it would rain most of the day.....But we did make a return trip to the Adams County Winery in the afternoon when Ernie got back.....Paulette, Dave,(Pat's other half), Ernie, and I tasted some wine and bought a couple bottles....(Pat was still napping).....then came back....had supper of grilled chicken, potato salad, and steamed veggies with fresh fruit and yes, some more wine.....Chatting until way after 10pm....

Today, Paulette is heading back home....she assures me that she'll post her photos when she gets home.....I'll try to do mine over the weekend as we're to go to Ernie's sister's on Sunday......

Pat and Dave are staying until Sunday.....today they are doing a "self-guided" battlefield tour...armed with info and booklets I picked up for them....their rig is a class B and has GPS, so they should do fine....We're staying back as we have more company arriving today.....Folks we know from our stay in Georgia....

Okay, will report more later and hopefully I'll have Pictures for ya' before the weekend is over...

Sounds busy, but fun :D I love the old battle fields. I always "feel" something when I'm there :?

Here are the pictures from our tour of Gettysburg. If you want a really good tour and inexpensive too (as in free) I would highly recommend either Ernie or Margie. Margie does a really good job. Unfortunately, I have no retention of the facts, or very little anyway. So, I'm going to post the pictures that I took and maybe make a comment or two as I remember facts. That area is really pretty and the history there is almost palpable. You can just feel it. I wish I knew if any of my father's ancestors participated there because they have a large monument that list all of the privates in each of the brigades and I would have done a tracing of the name. But, I don't know if we had any relatives there or not. Okay, on with the show.

We all thought this was so funny! You might have had to been there. But this was hanging inside the new visitor's center, between the men's room and the women's room!

This is the New Visitor's Center. Unfortunately, you have to pay for everything in here, except the gift shop! There is a museum, and a movie, but we didn't do either because of the cost.

That does not even come close to all of the statues and monuments there.

I enjoyed seeing the shots of the places I've been - with Ernie as a guide. But even better was seeing all of you. And, yes, that shot of the 3 of you is awesome.

Lori, did you ever get the banner???

The museum, the movie and the Cyclorama are all included in the admission cost and absolutely worth it. Went last year with my two sisters, my Swedish BIL, and 3 kids, ages 15 - 8 and everyone LOVED it. Also bought a Cd and did one of the self-guided driving tours. Very good day.

What a great day you had. Very interesting/sad time in our history. I remember very little of visiting there with my senior high class in 1967. :?

Hi Everyone,

Dave and I had a great time at the PA gtg. We arrived late Wednesday to have a delicious dinner of barbeque made by Paulette. Thursday was a day of rest for us and I managed a nap. Ernie, Lori and Paulette instructed the newbies on all sorts of RV stuff. I was taking notes and when I forgot pen and paper, Lori was there with both advice and notepaper and pen. Friday we took ourselves into Gettysburg and toured a bit but the big trip was to Walmart to get the essentials that were on the multiple notes I had taken. Now this was our first visit to a Walmart ever! We asked where the camping aisle was and the manager (who had just bought a new 5th wheel) took us for a tour of the RV aisle and as he recommended items that weren't on my list the other shopper added her recommendations. Being from the NY metro area it is rare that you are told where something is located in the store, much less a personal tour of the aisle with recommendations!

Saturday, Ernie was good enough to give us a few hours at the battlefield and we had a met their friends Joyce and Dane and their 2 dogs and the RVing education continued and a we had a great night talking into the night. Sunday we woke to rain and so we wrapped up the campsite and headed off back to NJ but we took backroads the entire way :) It was fun exploring and seeing the small towns along the way.

Sammy loved his week at the campsite meeting all types of dogs and being one of the gang. Today was tough for him as he misses his new friends Spinner, Guiness & Rosco.

We felt welcome, we learned alot and we had a blast.
Pat

Thanks Lori and Ernie and Paulette for taking us under your wings.
