air cards

Okay, as I plan to move into my condo, I was looking at getting Internet access through the cable co. But then, thought I, "why don't I just get an air card as I plan to do a lot of traveling?"

So, ladies, what are the best air cards? I have an iPhone with AT&T service, if that makes any difference.

I have an AT&T air card built into my Dell laptop. I went with them because that's who we have our cell phones with. It's $60. a month and I can usually get a signal most places, but not always fast enough to upload pics. I find if I can't get a good signal, if I wait till late at night and get on the front bed in the TH right next to the window I get a better signal. I haven't tried putting a tin foil hat on and climbing up the ladder!

I had AT&T for all my years traveling - until I switched to Verizon this year. Why the switch? Because AT&T - while they covered most of the country- was going to start charging me for areas where they are using other people's networks. Verizon assured me they won't do that - in fact they told me it's all their networks if you get a signal. I started having trouble in AZ - in fact would get text messages and emails. The phone they were ok with - but not the data.

When I cxl'd, they tried to save my business (as they all do) and asked me why. I said because you are sending me messages that I'm using data off line - and that you will start charging me for that - can you promise me I won't start getting charged. The person on the phone immediately said, "Well, we're sorry to lose you, bye" - guess that answered my question.

Since I travel so much - that was a killer for me. I switched my phone service also - because I had data on it - and was getting the same messages - got them also in a couple other states during the trip from AZ to AL.

I have Verizon air card ($60/Mo.) and cell. Only use it when traveling and it usually works very well. Have cable high speed Internet at home.

Have Verizon for both phone and aircard. I have found that I can almost always get on line with Verizon. Carole used to have Sprint and AT&T and she often didn't have any signal while I had a great signal. I think the $60 is for a package deal of phone and aircard. Just go on Verizon's website and check.

$60 is just the air card data usage. ... but you could use your phone to tether to the internet - I did that with my Blackberry when I had AT&T - about the same cost as an air card alone. I could use the phone and tether at the same time- although they told me I couldn't - so I expected that to quit someday lol

Beth I used to do that, too but it was my understanding that Verizon was going to (if they already haven't) charge for doing that. It was a loophole that you could get by without buying data usage.

DH has had 3 aircards over the last few years for work...it was work issued so it went by their carrier. First one was sprint..and it was iffy most of the time. He could not even get service in some areas along the Oregon Coast.

Then next one he got was AT&T...while it was a little better it was still not all that great.

He now has Verizon and has for the last 2 years. I can only think of a handful of times that we have not been able to get service.

I have had a verizon aircard, then changed to a tethered phone. less money per month and I had a separate phone number on my account but did it through my phone. So bottom line my phone had two numbers.

I have now gone with sprint and have had good results with sprint. So it is what ever suits you best. Most aircards are 60 a month, the second phone number was 30.00 a month.

Karen, if you have the data phones, you have to pay for data - it's only another $30 to get the tethering - so while I was paying $60 a month for data - only $30 was equivalent to the aircard. Because I had to pay for 30 to use the phone online by itself.

That said - AT&T is stabbing itself in the foot - big time - and I hate seeing it. While Jean and I were traveling - it was about equal now on service between AT&T and Verizon - but yes, AT&T was getting lousier in some of the places they were "buying" air. And now don't want their customers to use those areas for data.

Had AT&T and it sucked for traveling with the broadband!!! Ended up switching back to Verizon and got much better coverage. DXH took the broadband so I am using a tether on my Droid now and it has been a Godsend ;) I am hoping to get off of his plan and on a family share plan with a girlfriend of mine here. I use the data for my phone at a cost of $30/mo and can't justify paying another $60 for the same thing for my computer....What a ripoff! I just hope they don't start charging for tethers. Oh...I got out of the early termination fees because I had them check the AT&T coverage for my new SD address and there wasn't coverage there ;)
