Made it to Glacier...

WIfi is here, but low and slow.

Now I need you all to help make me feel better...because right now i do not. First off we left 2 hours later then planned this morning..because one of the truck tires was low. DH took it to Les Schwab and they found a screw in the tire...so that was fixed and we were on the road.

The drive was a bit long..as we had planned on leaving early..so we would not be driving in the heat of the day..plus i was not sure how long the drive would be from...it was about 50 miles further then we prefer to drive, but the original plan with the early start it didn't seem that bad. The reality was we averaged about 50-55 mph. So it was close to 5 pm before we finally got here.

Then I took the wrong turn going to our site...went to make a turn to get back out so we could go down the correct road. I swung out, then cut back in...bad move..because even though I missed the tree...the 4ft stump next to the tree..slightly hidden by the bushes..as that is all I saw in the mirror was the bushes. So now I have some nice scratches and a slightly bent axle. I am usually so cautious about making the turns and I usually have the kids and DH go find the site first. Once I flipped the campground map around the right way...ie upside down to the way it was printed..then I could see where I screwed up.

I will hopefully get the blog updated later..I need to be in a better mood..to write it out.

Ouch, a bent axle...can that be fixed? Don't feel bad, you all made it there, your in your site and tomorrow will be better after a nice sleep in your very own rv, surrounded by the ones you love.

We called Les Schwab first and they told us that if it is just a bent a little..which it is, as in it is still drivable. Not sure we want to try and make the drive back home with it that way. Since it is 650 miles.
They gave DH another number to call..and said that this place does straighten axles. Just not sure til we talk to them on how long it will take.
We are here til Friday. So I am hoping that it is somewhat of an easy repair. We won't really know anything til tomorrow.

Also the guy at Les Schwab that DH spoke to..told him he had to look up the number, that he should keep in on speed dial. As this seems to happen quite a bit here.
Okay...so I am not alone.

Honey,
Sorry for your problems, but have to weigh in here on "slight bent axle". I would strongly suggest getting it straightened out before you start home unless you are planning to replace your tires probably 2 times in 650 miles. A bent axle will literally eat the tires. Experience speaking here. We went through 3 Goodyear Marathons in Georgia when we didn't know our axle was bent out a little (came from the factory that way) Easy fix, not too expensive (cost much less than the new tires we had to buy in order to get home.)
Glad you didn't have any other problems. Have a great time.

Unfortunately, we have accidents. Little and big ones. In the scheme of things - this is a little one (hopefully). And no matter what size, shake it off and have a good time. Things happen. Life happens. We can either dwell on the negative, or make something positive. Kinda like the saying about when life gives you lemons - or is the glass 1/2 empty or 1/2 full.

As we all tell stories on ourselves on this forum - boy have we done most everything! - well, the one thing that keeps us all going - is while we might stop and want to kick and scream (or even really kick and scream) we then pick ourselves up, shake ourselves off- and go on living.

Enjoy GNP - it's a beautiful place. And you're there during a time of year when you can see it all!!!

Glacier is such a gorgeous place. Enjoy your time there. You'll see moose, white mountain goats way up in the mountains, etc. etc.
and beautiful lakes and waterfalls.

Kristy, I know how you must feel, because I would be feeling the same---BUT, as other have said, don't let a bent axle spoil your long-looked-forward-to visit in Glacier National Park! Your kids aren't letting it bother them, so take a lesson from them and have fun!

Now then---does any road insurance or waranty extended service cover bent axles? I guess road/towing service would cover getting towed to a place where they can fix it, yes? I am making a study of insurance policies, as I feel I really need them----just a holdover from what my father always taught me, that a bit each month for peace of mind sure beats no coverage for a huge repair bill down the line. I bit the bullet yesterday and got Good Sam's extended waranty insurance which covers all the major appliances in my trailer...for just about 20.00 per month. It also covers my stay in a motel, up to 100.00 per day, during the repair time. I went for the 200.00 deductible. Cost is locked in for three years. I could stash away 20.00 per month for the rest of my life, as some of you I know do, and still not cover the replacement of just my refrigerator, for instance. So now I have Good Sam's towing service and their extended waranty plan service. I paid for it outright rather than a bit each month, but I had three payment options I could have chosen. Whatever works for us is what we should go with. The fear of a huge repair bill would spoil any peace of mind I can now have as I make my way alone down the highways. My accident insurance is with my car insurance, as between my ex and me, we have 4 vehicles and our houses on the policy. My part of the fee is being covered by the part of my Medicare coverage that his health plan (which I am on) requires be taken out, and then returned, each quarter of a year. The returns go to him, and he pays my share of the car/trailer accident insurance. I will still pay my own house insurance.

Always something to think about, eh??

Happy travels!

Sorry you've had a run-in with a hidden stump. Certainly was something
anyone could miss.
I agree with the others. Shake it off as best you can because you are in
a beautiful park. When we were there 6 yrs ago and paid our fee at the gate, the young man taking the money was from our little hometown! It's a small
world after all.
Hoping the axle is a quick and fairly inexpensive fix.
