Dumb questions on The Nook Reader

Postby retiredhappy » Sat Jul 17, 2010 6:21 pm

OK, B&N has a wifi nook for $149. I don't understand how I can get the books downloaded if I'm not on AT&T or at a B&N store. for instance, if I'm at an RV park with free wifi? Will someone who is more technically knowledgeable please explain in small words. The other thing is that I rarely buy new books, even paperback. I get mine from a paperback exchange or from RV park libraries. Is it expensive to download them?

As Beth favors the Nook, she can best explain the WiFi part. You might check the Book section as we talked at some length on eReaders.
With most eReaders, you can download from their book list and while some of their books are free, others cost anywhere from a buck to, well, so far I've only seen 12.99 as the highest, but with thousands to look at, I'm sure there are more expensive. I've read where college textbooks are going to start showing up for eReaders to download. I'm not sure how easy it would be to study that way, but that seems to be the way that media is heading.

Quess what?? I took the plunge yesterday and bought a Nook.
Do I have it ALL figured out -- NO! But the download is EASY, even for me.
You can either download via the computer or use the wifi on the nook.
I found I would rather "browse" the books on the computer - you can't believe how many there are...
But then send it right to your nook.soooo easy!
Look at the BN site and check out the ebooks- the prices are listed, many free others under $5, etc.
I'm having a blast with mine, even read my first book "My Friends Have Hairy Legs"
Karen, stop at a BN, the one on San Pedro had a great guy to explain it all to me.
Also found on the book list something about using the nook. It probably will do much more than I know of right now.
Good luck - we can share books too!

Karen, there are two Nooks - one for 149, one for 199 (I think). The $149 doesn't have wifi - it has the 3g network - and anywhere that you can get a 3g connection, you can use it. It connect automatically. The 199 one has the 3g network AND wifi - so if you aren't someplace where you can connect, but they have a wifi connection - you can use that also.

Hope that helps. And, yes, you can download to your computer. I have their free ereader on my computer and just downloaded a bunch of free classics today. I have yet to buy the Nook - will be doing so, probably sooner than my pocketbook would like - but I read an entire book on my computer today. Would take one to bed with me if I had the actual Nook. So, it's in the sooner rather than later time frame now.

Oh, and you can purchase ebooks from anyplace that sells them - and you can take out ebooks from libraries that offer them on your Nook.

Thanks for correcting me, I knew that! That's what I get for not double-checking my own writing. For all the info: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=4560
