WEDNESDAY ALREADY????

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

WEDNESDAY ALREADY????

"On behalf of the North American Bear Center, thank you all from the bottoms of our hearts for your persistence and hard work to create this very successful outcome in the face of stiff competition. It took far more votes to accomplish this than any of us thought. You kept working—hard. We share your passion to educate about bears, and that is exactly what will result from your efforts. We also thank J P Morgan Chase Community Giving for its effort to support grassroots organizations that work with a broad internet constituency. Their efforts to stimulate the effectiveness of small organizations that would have a hard time obtaining grants from many foundations is much appreciated and is good for America.”

This is big, of course. We’re thinking back to the end of June when Susan Tillman discovered the contest, cast the first vote for the Bear Center, and let us know about the contest. We were baffled how the Bear Center ended up with such a great opportunity. You all went to work for two weeks of nail-biting suspense, elevating us to 3rd place and $100,000. Absolutely incredible.

A day after Sandra let us know about the Bear Center being in the Chase contest, she let us know that James Wert had discovered that the Wildlife Research Institute was also in the running, and he cast the first vote to start more suspense and success. Thank you all.

Out in the field, Lily and Hope continued to bond. When Hope cried out in distress, Lily came running, grunting her concern.

Hope is foraging along with Lily, taking advantage of Lily’s ability to pull down tall juneberry bushes. They also were eating ant pupae, alder-leafed buckthorn berries, dewberries, raspberries, and blueberries. Hope sticks to Lily like glue—more closely than we have seen with other cubs, even leaving the nuts we brought to catch up with Lily.

Lily vocalized several times while nursing Hope. We have never heard a mother do that before and don’t know what it means.

The relatively short time we accompanied them, we saw no play. Unlike yesterday, they skipped the frivolities and got down to the work of foraging.

Today, they covered over 3 miles, finding many feeding locations. This is farther than Hope was moving on her own. This is the main thing mothers teach—not what to eat but feeding locations. Cubs retain the information. While foraging, cubs have the advantage of their mother’s ability to detect danger and communicate it by a change in her breathing. Cubs also respond to danger on their own, but having the mother nearby to alert them allows cubs to concentrate more on foraging and not be quite the nervous cub Hope was for these past 6 weeks.

We are so glad they are back together.

Thank you again for all you do.

—Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center

Like mother, like daughter!! What a joyous picture for us all to see after 6 weeks of this litle cub being on her own!

GOOD MORNING TO ALL!

With the help of all who voted, the NABC will be awarded 100,000 dollars by Chase Bank, and the Wildlife Research institute will be awarded 20,000 dollars! This is such a boost to both of those organizations to continue with their educational studies to help us all understand at least one animal with which we share this planet. July 12th was a super day all around.

This is to be my last day at this fantastic campsite, as I have work to do at home. It rained hard last night, but any nasty lightning storms again circled me here. Today it is about 68 degrees, the lake is nearly dead calm, and it could become a good swimming day. Laura, her husband, her two sons and their wives came over yesterday afternoon and we all went swimming. Then we went to the bar/lodge for a couple of cold drinks while sitting out on their deck watching the lake and feeling the cool breeze. It is so nice to have some time to get together with them all again----we shared all summer every year at my pond when the kids were little.

I hope all is well with you, wherever you may be. I hope you'll stop by and let us know what's up and share some coffee. Happy Wednesday!
Life is about learning to dance in the rain
Happy travels!

Good Morning to All - i have actually stayed signed in for a couple of days - wish it would stay that way.
Right now it is beautiful here in Indiana but that will soon end - the humidity is VERY high and temps are supposed to reach the mid 90s today and tomorrow. Last year all summer we only had 4 days 90 or over - so far this year there have already been 9.
Guess I won't get my laundry room painted until the fall. Or the binding on the quilt hand stitched.
We have maybe aquired a dog - he just wandered in the other day - we are trying to find his owner - so far no luck - we think he was just dumped here in the hills. He is well behaved - haven't heard him bark yet - and he goes in and out the doggy door. Not sure I'm ready to get involved with a dog again.
Waiting for my new printer to get here - good price and no shipping charges from the HP site - it is a wide format printer prints 13x 17 pages. (So was the one that stopped working.)
Hope all have a safe and not too hot day.

Sorry to hear your vacation is over Soos you were having such a good time. I am amazed that Hope and Lily are back together, didn't realize it had been 6 weeks.
Carol we're having the same heat today and again tomorrow and probably above 90 for next couple of weeks :( I think we had more days over 90 in June and July than under, with June being the 2nd or 3rd hottest on record for the area. I want to go to Seattle or around Eureka, CA. the high there today is supposed to be 61, sounds wonderful to me!! I spent a summer on Patrick's Point near Trinidad, CA and it was seldom above 70 degrees, I loved the foggy mornings. Oh well, I'll just turn up the A/C and pretend. Not much on today, have a lady coming for hypnosis to help with weight loss this afternoon. The girl I'm working with to stop smoking isn't doing well and is going to try a support group offered through the health dept. in addition to the hypnosis.
Oh, and Carol it sounds as though you and the driver have been adopted! A 13 year old girl I know recently adopted an 11 year old poodle from a local shelter. It was a puppy mill rescue and is a real sweetie.

Good-morning !!! Really pretty outside this morning. I have always loved the mornings after a rain and the sun first comes up. Tomorrow have a dr. app. I feel great, so he should just let me go on my way. (my opinion). I will have to be up and gone way before this in the morning. I prefer early morning app., but does mean leaving really early. My A/C is not working in my car,it went the day before my surgery, great timing  so early morn. app. a must right now. Hopefully I will be back before it hits 90's. Going to be a wee bit before its fixed, I think. Got the bill for my well repair, glad I waited out the week end before calling, they get an arm and a leg just for driving out here and messing around for awhile ;) Need water, but when I first saw bill thought I might need a heart dr. :o  Had the same problem before, and they have sure gone up on their prices. Oh well, such is life and the economy.

Supposed to be in mid 90's today, good day to go out and run the Gen on the r.v. and run the A/C in there. A little past time, but hopefully will still crank right up. I've thought of it a couple of times, and just haven't done it. Anyone know how that is? Surely, I am not the only one that gets a lazy streak :o  It needs a good wash and wax job, car too. I feel like doing it too, but will wait until dr. visit tomorrow. I use my long handled r.v. brush on my car and it makes a fast job on it. Couple of swipes down each side and its done. I like that.

Along with everyone else, I have thoroughly enjoyed Liz's travels this year. Some of the places she and i, went to, and so nice to see them again, but then too, so many new places. If you want a Great trip planned, let Liz do it. She finds everything there is along any particular route. Her brother,(my husband) used to do that too. He spent months before our trips planning surprises for me. He enjoyed that as much as our trip. Think Liz does too. Its so nice seeing all of the Sistahs she is seeing along the way this time too. Thats great. What a super trip. Looks like she has found some cooler weather too, which is great, thought she was going to melt before she could leave Fl. :D

Thought of Barbie, when I heard the weather report this morning, didn't sound to good for her up there in her tent. Sure hope that report was wrong and its ok in area she and Linda are in. I'm so in hopes she has a great time, she needs it, with her working conditions. Got my fingers crossed !!

All the travelers stay safe and hopefully your travels are taking you to cooler places as its HOT EVERYWHERE, it seems.
Have a Great day everyone, hope all have the means to stay cool too. Each day, whatever it is , is a Blessing, so appreciate and enjoy !!!
CArol
Thank you Soos, for the report and the pix this morning. I am so glad they are back together. That little one so alone , was so sad. What a happy time now though,

good morning ladies
nothing going on in my world except the heat! 97 degrees at 5:30 in the morning!
Its a little humid, but not bad.
I'm bothered by an incident that happened locally here in town. A lady was
found dead in her home and they think it was heat related. She was only 66, but
apparently her water was shut off and the neighbors had been bringing her bottles
of water everyday, but even though she had electricity she wouldn't run the a/c.
I guess she didn't want her electricity to get shut off as well. I can certainly understand
being frugal on a budget, but some how in the back of my mind, I feel like this just
should not have happened. Her house was an average low income style brick/stucco
home. Makes me wonder about a lot of things. Hope more details come out during
the investigation.
Too much terrible stuff on the news here, I need to stop watching the news and watch
a good comedy movie instead.
Everyone have a good day and be safe.

Good Morning Ladies, yes it will be hot here today also in the mid 90s... we got a much needed rain yesterday helped the flowers and grass... now it needs mowing...
We are almost done with sorting out the 'things'... wow that will be great no room or closet left untouched... all neat and clean and free of junk and clutter...
It is so good to hear you are recovering Carol...
We had Chinese take out last night... oh! it was so good... have not had that in a long time...
Ah Soos you have had such a nice vacation... just think you can do that when ever you want to!
I can understand about the TV and watching the news... there are only sensational stories on there... if it is good news it only gets a few minutes of coverage...
I hope everyone has a good day if you are driving take care and if you are parked in your favorite camp site enjoy...

Carol, you could go to the doctor in your motorhome and run the generator and a/c. lol They are not always easy to park but sometimes when I'm out I wish I was in my motorhome. Yesterday I had to hang around town for a couple of hours to make sure my son got a flight out. It would have been cheaper to be in my motorhome that trying to stay cool in the stores. His flight was delayed so wasn't sure he would get out. He is finally going to Seattle to get his car. Now I have to worry about him being on the road. I'm not sure what shape that car is in.

It's hot here too but not as hot as last week. It was 101 one day. It has finally stopped raining everyday. My house cats pester me every morning to go out but in this heat they are back inside in 10 minutes. Too hot to be out in a fur coat. My DH runs a fan in the barn and the barn cats will all be sleeping on the cement in front of the fan.
