Creepy worms, eeeewww

Postby avalen » Thu Sep 11, 2008 6:19 am

when I got off the freeway last evening on that last street home, WORMS, creepy
big green worms with a horn were marching across the road, it was awful and they
were everywhere, pulled into my drive, saw a couple more then when I let the dogs
out in the back yard there they were again. I can't imagine where they came from
and they certainly acted like they had somewhere to go. Got out a big coffee can
and filled it with these creepy things. It just seems so weird cause they just showed
up and when I thought I had the yard cleaned, I turned around and there were
hundreds more! I'm sure its some sort of hatching thing going on but we didn't
have it last year and I can only feel bad for the farming indians that are not too
far away. I can imagine their fields will be empty this morning of all growth.
There are fields of alfalfa nearby and also fields of cotton. The road btw was
a green slimy mess. eeeewwww

Ewww....it creeped me out just reading your email. I know that many worms and bugs have purposes, but stay away from me! And you!

Worms with horns? You need to take a picture. Never saw a worm with a horn - and as creepy as they might be - I want to see!

Ick! I am setting here very glad that I have chickens. They would have done their best to rid you of the worms. Do you have a pic of them? I would love to see it!

You might be talking about the tomato horn worm.

thank you for that link Carol, and I did go out and take a picture for you ladies
but then my batteries went bye bye, and I'm looking for my cord to load it on
the puter. They do look similiar to the tomatoe worm, the tomatoe worm
being solid green to match the stems on the tomatoes and that big horn,
but these are slightly different color but they have that same horn thing.
They are still out there migrating today. They just creep me out but I'll
try to get that pic uploaded tonight.

Carol's article is exactly what you show a pic of - explains these cute little caterpillars well. Yes, I said cute. I LIKE caterpillars - LOL

Good thing about these, is they aren't harmful to you or the plants, so your neighboring farmers, etc don't have anything to worry about. And the moths they become are pretty, too.

There was a caterpillar in WI I used to watch in the late summer/early fall - it had a stripe around it's middle - how big the stripe was would tell us whether we had a cold winter coming.
