Road Runner sighting

Postby sharon » Sat Jul 10, 2010 1:54 pm

Just saw a road runner in my backyard, but by the time I grabbed the camera he was gone. I've never seen one around here before. I think my daughter has them on her property about 10 miles from here, but she lives on 30 acres of pretty much undeveloped land. Gonna have to keep an eye out now for him and try and get him to pose for a photo session.

I've never seen even a picture of a real one. Just the cartoon guy.
Google Image search - they are soooo cute!

I remember the first time I saw one................it was bigger than I had
thought from looking at pictures. They are very fast and they eat bugs, snakes
and lizards.

Yeah, got 'Yotes out here too. I hear them singing almost every evening and I think they are up in the little hill not to far from me. When Chewy and I took our pack walk a couple of weeks ago we walked up near the hill and I could hear them or their babies yipping so Chewy and I avoid walking that way now. She's just the right size for a coyote meal....nice and fat!

I've seen lots of roadrunners in the wild growing up in NM and a former BF lives next to a nature preserve and he had one build a nest in the hitch on his 5'er. And you're right Ava, they're meat eaters. Haven't seen many lizards or snakes around here, so don't know what this guy is eating.

I absolutely love road runners - hope you find him again for a picture opportunity. Here's a pic of one I got in AZ last fall:

Cool! Looks kind of like the one in my yard, but didn't see the white spots, but they could have been there, I was busy getting the camera out and shushing the mouth. (Chewy)

The Roadrunners, unfortunately, also eat bird eggs and baby birds. :( However, in breeding plummage that are beautiful birds. Just wish they would beg for hot dogs on the corner and leave the birds alone! :)
