35mm dinosaur

I know when technology changes, it's out with the old and in with the new, but gee:

One of the things stolen when my house got broken into was my digital camera. I hadn't been able to replace it in time for my mini vacation to Catalina Island a week or so ago, so I dug out my old Cannon Sure Shot. Still had 2 or 3 rolls of film with develop date of 2011, so I was able to get some pictures.

A day or two after I got home, I ran over to Sam's, figuring I could get the 1-hour developing while I ate my lunch. They no longer develop regular film! Only digital pictures. The guy said most places have stopped developing regular film, but suggested Walmart. He said they don't do the 1-hour thing any longer, but can send it out and it will take 3-4 days.

I carried the film around in my purse and asked for developing in K Mart (no); one chain pharmacy (no); and finally made a special trip to Walmart. Nope! Don't even send out. Got rid of the developing machine to make room for better and faster digital developing.

I finally found another pharmacy that said they still could send it out, but I wouldn't get it back until this coming Friday - a week! And the cost? $9.99. Used to be around $3 at Sam's. Guess you know I ran right out and bought a new digital camera!

Sure makes me frustrted when they completely do away with one technology when a new one comes out. Typewriters, computers, VHS tape, audio tapes, phones, etc. Guess I'm the dinosaur! I hate throwing out perfectly good working things!

I too love my 35mm camera which is still in perfect working order.
BTW: Try WalGreens or Target if either in your area. They still develop film in store around here but probably not for much longer. I had trouble finding 35mm film to buy last fall.

I used to have a Canon SureShot. It took great photos! Try going to a photo specialty place like Black's Photo or a camera store. I know what you mean about forcing us into new technology. Like the digital TV's. I have a VCR/DVD player combo. I have both videos and dvd's so I need that. When I move, I can replace my TV but they don't sell the combo VCR's anymore so that will come with me. Same with my stereo that plays both cassettes and CD's since I still have a ton of cassettes that I love. of course there are the cell phones that become obsolete every 6 months for new, better ones with more bells and whistles. ...and don't get me started on printers!

Here's a pretty cheap on-line film developing place - first roll free, second roll $3.00.
Don't know if there's any catch or not...

Walgreens (around here) still develops the 35mm film. You can also get it on a disc so you canload it on the computer. Don't know how long this will last either. Linda

ohhhhhh maaannnnnn I better check our walmart and see if they still do it, they
have been rebuilding the store into a super walmart and the photo dept has a bunch
of new equipment. I love my canon 35mm too and I still have 3 rolls of film for it.
Sure hope I can get film developed before it totally falls off the planet!

I think film will be around for awhile yet. I know that a lot of professional photographers still prefer using film over digital.

You know digital has taken over the market when Kodak discontinues film manufacturing.
