On the Road Again! (almost)

Postby Paulette » Wed Jun 23, 2010 8:12 am

Okay, I'm finally starting to get excited about my upcoming trip. We leave tomorrow morning, heading west. I'm taking DGD to Iowa to spend the summer with her Dad and family. Don't know what I'll do with myself this summer without her around. :( However, we are leaving in the morning, will overnight (hopefully) in Milan OH and continue to Indiana Dunes State Park on Friday. We plan on staying there until Thursday. Son #2 lives in Chicago now so I bought City Passes for us to do the tourist thing while there. Should be fun. I have been "through" Chicago (via O'Hare!) but never "to" Chicago, so I'm looking forward to really seeing the city. But I do have to admit that I am not a city person.

From there we'll head further west to Atlantic, where her Dad lives. I only plan on staying there till after the fireworks! I'll leave her behind and turn around and head back home. On the way back home, I'm going to try really hard to have enough time to have "brunch" with bikerchic777 somewhere around Des Moines. I know she is workcamping just north of there and we've been in touch already.

I'll try and post as I go, but if not, I'll definitely post when I get settled in one spot or the other. Looks like we got the last available site at Dunes SP so it might be crowded there. But it looks like a nice campground right on Lake Michigan. Maybe I'll even get to get the kayak out! Here's hoping!

Paulette, sounds like a fun trip. Like you I'm not a city person but I did want to see Chicago so last summer I took the train from Memphis to Chicago and stayed in town overnight before taking another train from Chicago to Seattle (a really wow trip). I traveled with just a backpack so after walking around the train station and marveling at the architecture I walked around town a bit and then checked in at my hotel (I splurged for a room with a view of the fireworks etc. at Navy Pier. I'm a big walker and choose to use city transportation whenever possible but I do recommend the Big Red Bus. You pay I think $30.00 but you get an all day pass and you can get on and off all over the city plus each bus has a knowledgeable guide (I got lucky and had one bus with an architecture student as a guide - rode one whole route with him just to learn). Also, while the upper decks are open, the lower seating is enclosed and air conditioned which was very helpful on a hot day. Lots to see in Chi town and 1 or 2 days is just not enough. Have fun!!

Have a great trip. I've never stayed at the Indiana Dunes - well that's not quite true - went there after a prom once and didn't come home till the next day - but we didn't have camping stuff LOL - just were playing on the dunes. Chicago is my favorite big city. Lots to do and see. Since you'll have your dgd, I do suggest you get to Lincoln Park Zoo - it's right in the city and a great zoo. If she likes museums, there are some terrific ones, as well as a great Planaterium and The Art Institute - well, lots to do - and you'll only be able to touch on it.

All along the waterfront, you can walk - it's great. Enjoy it :) And all the rest, too. Hope the weather is good for you.

Wow! I've "been" to Chicago (O'Hare) as well, but I've never seen it. Have a great time there and in the rest of your travels!

Sure sounds like a fun time planned for you ahead, Paulette! I, personally, would skip Chicago, but only because cities make me feel cooped up and trapped and sick! I am sure you will have a great time, especially if you choose to go bussing it, as suggested. The zoo, which I visited years and years ago, was a fun place, and I think it's probably even better now, hopefully, as the older animal enclosures were like torture chambers for them.

Can't wait to see your pictures!
