Window Film

This may have been discussed before bit I can't remember so...I have problem in my rig with window coverings, called Eddie. He tears them up when I'm gone, trying to see where I went. Current issue is small window by kitchen sink - has blinds which were destroyed (he climbs up on table then up on the counter) I was thinking about just using some kind of stick on film (like tinting) for privacy. I googled it and there are 2 kinds, one for homes and one for vehicles. I assume I should use the vehicle type. My question is, has anyone ever used this before on a MH or trailer? Does it work well? I think it could also help keep it cooler inside during summer as she usually sits out in sun with no cover and is stifling inside if I need to go do any kind of work. The web site said it should be applied inside but I don't know if he could scratch it off or what. Anybody know about this? It's apparently widely available at places like auto zone, so I'll probably stop in and price it. If not too expensive, maybe I'll just buy a roll and try it.

I had that put on the windows in the TT during the summer of 2009 when I was in Tucson. It was really hot and this made an immediate difference. It allows you to see out just fine and folks are not able to see in during the day, but at night they can see in quite well. So you might keep the curtains or whatever and just pull them aside/up when you leave so Eddie can see out and then when you need the privacy at night you can close them. I have some of the film that I plan to put on the windows of my current rig. Primarily, I am doing that for heat control and the ability to think about doing away with the day/night shades.

So i would highly recommend your doing that as I think you will like it. I don't think Eddie will scratch it off because you still have the ability to see outside.

I've done this, and you can just get the stuff from Home Depot like they put
on house windows. There are several different kinds, all the way from reflective,
(looks like silver from the outside) to the smoked and even blackout kind.
They sell a kit to put it on that includes a spray, a cutter and a little squeegie.
You really don't need it, all you need is windex, a utility knife and a squeegie.
(Unless you don't have that stuff) You clean the windows first with the windex
and then after that you spray on the windex and leave the glass very wet, then
apply the film and use the squeegie to squeegie out the air bubbles. You can
add more windex on top if need be. The utility knife is used to cut the excess
off the edges so you get a neat and tidy job.

You can use the house film on all but the windows to the cab area. You have to use the specialized ones if you want to put it on those windows. I rarely shut all my curtains, etc when I leave - figure whatever dog I've had in here at the time wants to see out. So, I leave the shades up over the sofa. And they have access to the cab area and unless I have the outside white cover on, can look out from up there, also.

I had used the truck/car window film on my drivers and passengers doors to see if it helped me with the sun - but if I were to do that again, I'd pay the price for it to be done correctly. Opening and shutting windows eventually ruined that. That wouldn't be a problem on something like my over sink window. But be careful on the windows that open. Make sure it's not going to catch when you do open the windows.

I've seen the windowshield cover that is mesh that are put on the outside of the front cab windows. Yes, you can see out but no one can see in, except at night. But I've seen the same type of windowshield cover that is made from vinyl and the backing is some sort of soft flannel material like wheel covers. Has anyone used one? Living in the desert I would like to use some sort of windowshield cover.

I adore, I think it's called, velum. I got mine, as well, at home depot. One of my apts. has a window that goes from a tenant space on one side to the barn space on the other. For privacy I got this velum. So easy to put on. Different styles to choose from. I don't know how it might hold up when exposed to the outside elements, though. No issue with
opening the usual window, though, as it fits glass on glass. Very possibly might be an issue on a roll up window.

Carol, when I had my other coach (Class C) I had one of the covers you were asking about. I loved it as it kept the cab much much cooler and felt very private. Was easy to put on and take off too. Was well worth whatever I paid for it.

Cat, I use the vinyl one and highly recommend it when parked in really hot or really cold areas. It makes a big difference. I kept my little rig nice and cool in the Texas summer heat with that window cover. The mesh ones don't do the same - wouldn't save on my air conditioning bill And I like having nothing on the window when I don't need it - I like having the natural look out (same reason I prefer seeing the world without sunglasses on). But have been in rigs with the mesh - it's nice - but people CAN see in through it in the night when you have lights on inside.
