Canoeing the Rio Grande ...

Okay, I've given up the notion that I need to stay close to home because of my dog Bandit's aging health issues. He's doing well at the state park this summer, and so I've accepted a volunteer gig as a canoe guide this fall at the Santa Ana NWR. I'll be there October-December. The woman who called me did the Snoopy dance when I told her about my public relations / media / web skills.

So in my off-river times I'll work on educational outreach & publicity. We'll also be working together on developing New Media strategies, via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. Exciting. And my rig will be 100 yards from my work space so I'll be able to make arrangements for someone to "pee" the dogs while I'm on the river.

Beats picking up trash and staffing the visitor center. :D The woman I talked to said she really likes her vet in McAllen, about a half hour away.

I know many of you travel with ailing pets ... and I think it only matters that he's with me. He's going down the MH steps just fine (I hold his harness so that he knows I won't let him fall) and I lift him over the 1st three steps onto the interior MH steps. I do this because the first step is rather a reach because I had to raise the MH quite high to level it on the site. He's only 20 lbs. so it's not a problem.

Anyway, this means I'll be in the MH seven months this year -- which is what I like.

Oh, and one benefit to having a dog who can't always control his bladder ... it's a great indication of how level the rig is.

Great news - and it sounds like a job that is something you'll love.

I've lost 2 aging dogs while traveling. I honestly believe I would have lost Tips much sooner if I hadn't been on the road. He loved going to new places, sniffing new things. Gave him a new lease on life for awhile. Yep, there are challenges involved, but that's true if you don't travel, also. Just a matter of making the necessary adjustments.

I'm so glad that you'll be able to have the best of both worlds - taking care of you baby and doing the traveling you love.

Just curious as to what fulltimers do/have done, with their deceased pets?

Yeah! I'll be down in the valley this winter most likely from December to mid_March. We will definitely have to get together. The Santa Ana NWR is a great place to go birding. I'll be staying in either Mercedes or Alamo. Will be looking forward to meeting up with you.

Goodie, goodie! Maybe we can get Karen to come down, and we will need to do some South Padre Island beach time, too.

I'm sure it would be an individual decision, but I had Bandit cremated, as well as my
other dogs over the years but for me since I'm local for several years that part was
not a problem. Most vets have the capability to cremate or send them out to be cremated.
In Colorado, my vet sent them out. Had I have been on the road when this happened, I
would just have to stay put until the ashes came back. It only took a week and even now
Bandit will be on the road with me and I'll leave a little of him everywhere we go when that
time comes.

Birdie ... That's exactly where I'll be. I look forward to meeting up with you in December. I want to learn more about birding as well.
