That is scary. I didn't know anything about it. Just proves businesses need to be more concerned about what their business does as far as the general public is concerned. EASY fix, just take out the hard drive when lease is over and keep that is a safe place. Linda

Wouldn't matter if we became hermits or went fulltime; its the doctor's office making a copy of your medical record; the insurance company,the bank, etc, etc. Why aren't the copy machine manufacturers/sellers telling their customers how to delete/wipe the hard drives when they get rid of a copier?

They do tell them, but the companies that buy or lease the machines either don't want to pay the extra $500 to get the program to wipe the hard drive or they just ignore the threat.

Maybe some manufacturers/sellers do, but the person in charge of the office equipment might not be there any longer and didn't get the word out. When I worked in an office, we had two people that were assigned to the copiers. They were in charge of changing toner (probably don't do this anymore) and dealt with paper jams. This was so they were both done right and the drum didn't get scratched. Somebody down the chain should know about the hard drive and get it erased. Maybe now it will happen. Linda

Wow! That IS scary! I never knew copiers had hard drives. Apparently a lot of people don't know that either. But, unfortunately, because of that report, not only does the public know that now, but so do millions of identity thieves (and wanna be's) that are going right out now to buy thousands of used copiers and go into business stealing everyone's identity!
