What Emergency Road Service?

Postby retiredhappy » Wed Apr 28, 2010 5:36 am

I'm thinking about dumping Good Sam's emergency road service when it expires. I'm really, really tired of all the "Urgent" and "Last Notice" junk mail they send out. What road services other than Good Sam do any of you have? Anyone have Allstate Motor Club?

I have both AAA and Good Sams. I too hate the junk mail I get. Haven't had to use Good Sams ERS yet, but know Carolinagal has, and likes it.

when I get my RV eventually, I plan to use AAA as it's my major insurance for home and car so I would get multiple discount. But I have been wondering about joining Good Sam as I got an app. in the mail the other day and was going to post a question about it to see what others experience has been.

I pm'd you - but after others here - want to warn anyone against AAA for their rv. They are not equal in all states, and you can be sorry. So, if that's all you'll have, you might want to rethink it and get a 2nd or different for your ERS. I'm not against AAA - just have had people tell me firsthand about problems they've had - in one case they dropped AAA for everything after they were stranded and got no help. If you do a search on rv.net, you can find lots of other stories similar.

You also can get rid of all the GS junk mail - I don't get any. If you can't find online the places to check - call them - both GS and ERS and tell them to take you off ALL mailing lists - and they will. Everything except your billing :) As I said in my pm, I've had to use them several times and they've always come through for me. And they really worked hard to get Jean help just last month when we were in the middle of nowhere and no one wanted to come there. And who came were fantastic.

The service I've heard is good other than GS is Coach.net. If I considered changing I'd look into them.

Thanks Beth, don't know why I didn't think of that. I just called the 800 # on the back of my card and it took less than 5 minutes to get rid of all that junk mail. I can get the magazine online too, so saved that tree as well. They were very nice about it.

I wrote a long post on how much I liked and trusted GS, got interrupted, came back and lost it. I had bought AAA, right after I was on my own, good price, told yes it covered my R.V. Several months later when I got the paperwork , it boldly stateS DID NOT COVER RECREATIONAL VEHICLES. Wish I could have gotten the same person who swore to me it also covered my r.v., I was so angry. Waste of money there, of course, it was not refunded, but always a bright spot in all troubles, I did not have a reason to call them for help, traveled THINKING I was covered. As in all things, the state where you live makes a huge difference too.

So I have no suggestions other then really read your policy and make sure your recreational vehicle is totally covered !!! GS, knows what r.v.s are and they do provide proper road service with, a tow vehicle large enough to take you to wherever. Also the personel, in whatever area of mechanical problems you might be having. They also cover my car, for same fee which is very reasonable in my opinion. One yr. I had to call for tows for both my vehicles, got my money back plus, that yr. Really read your paperwork, do not take someones word for what they say you are getting.

Good luck and Safe and Happy travels, with peace of mind KNOWING you are insured properly !!!!

Carol

I'm also going to call and get rid of the clutter in my mailbox, Thank you !!!

I have Coach-Net and I love love love them! I got a free year from Monaco when I bought my RV and thought whoop-de-do, why do I need this, I have road side and towing thru my Progressive Insurance free. Then when in Washington 4 years ago, got ready to leave for Alaska and the living room slide wouldn't come in. On a Sunday. Read my manual, found out it couldn't be put in maually as some can. Couldn't find anyone to come out. Called Coach-net, talked to one of their techs to see if he could walk me thru it, he said no can do, turned me over to one of their operators, he found a guy to come out and even made me a reservation in Chilliwack, Canada a few miles from where I was staying to take it in and get it fixed. Of course I had to pay the guy that came out and got my slide in, but Monaco re-imbursed me since I was still under warranty. That's one of the reasons I like them, they aren't just a roadside assistance, they have techs that you can talk to and if it's minor they can walk you thru troubleshooting and repairing. Thank goodness I haven't had to use them since, but it's good just knowing they're there if I need them.

As an aside, when I arrived at the company in Canada it looked like a small yoyo place and the guy they assigned me to looked about 18 and I thought oh oh, I'm in trouble here, but boy was I mistaken! That kid was smart as a whip, thought he knew what the problem was, got on the phone with Monaco, had them fax electrical diagrams to him and found out there was a solenoid where there shouldn't be one, argued with Monaco about it and found out he was right, but he wouldn't take the solenoid out until he had a fax from Monaco stating that he had their permission to do so. He told me he just wanted to make sure I was covered just in case anything else happened. I gave him a $50 tip for taking care of me. It's stayed fixed for 4 years now, so guess he did a good job.

I have Coach Net. Have never had to have them come out but have called them for verbal assistance/information several times. It works for me.

I really like being able to talk to a tech - don't have that with GS. Think I will switch to Coach Net when the time comes. thanks.

You might want to do a side by side comparison of the two. Looks like GS has pet assistance but coach doesn't list that. GS is cheaper per year.

I recently purchased Good Sam RS for the purchase of my first RV in December '09. Wtih that said, I have heard good things about Coach Net.
I was told that Auto RS is not the RS to get for RVs. Good Sam RS will also work to tow my vehicle, too.

I, too, called the 800 number at Good Sam complaining that I could never tell if my yearly payment was due to be renewed, or if they were just sending me tons and tons of stuff to confuse me and cause me to send in more and more money! (And it worked a couple of times, I am afraid!) And so now I just belong to the Good Sam Road Service, as it seems to have the best ratings by most RVers. I used to belong to the Good Sam Club, whatever that was for----maybe a magazine and discounts at certain campsites, but I did not renew that. Up to this point, I stayed in few to no Good Sam sites, so not worth the extra money for me. When I take to the roads, I may change my mind and rejoin the club. You can also eliminate all the stuff they send by going online and requesting it, I was told.

Many road services do not cover trailers or other vehicles in the family as Good Sam seems to do. I am considering getting a quote as to how much it would cost for their trailer insurance, rather than having the trailer on my car policy as I do now. When I get a minute to think and dial, I will do that!

I heard from a local towing service that AAA is really lousy and undependable. He hates dealing with them. I would stick with companies that specialize in RV's. I know Linda bought the Sam's Club RS when she was up here and she ended up needing them to tow her rig a few days later down in Iowa when her starter went out. She got her money's worth and then some in less than a week after getting the insurance!
