A Sunday Stroll

Postby Forestgal » Mon Apr 26, 2010 9:10 pm

Yesterday I had the opportunity to spend some time at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands, down by the beach. I'd never been there before and a group was going so I decided to join them. There's lots of history about the area but I won't bore you with the little bit I remembered. Nor will I even attempt to identify the birds I saw -- I'll leave that for the experts. :)

It was a beautiful day. The folks I was with were delightful, the weather was perfect, and the area was beautiful. Only downside to the day was that Jed couldn't come due to the nesting birds and I got a bit of a sunburn on my neck. But I'll live & Jed got a good walk before I left.

Anyway, here are some pictures of my morning at Bolsa Chica:

This is a swallow (one bird I DO know). They were flitting all over the place:

This is what's left of a WWII gun turret. You can see the ocean in the distance. There are 2 of them here, left over from when the U.S. thought they needed to protect the West Coast from the Japanese. This was as close as we could get to it:

A view back up the trail. Nothing strenuous, just a delightful stroll:

Nest from either a bald eagle or blue heron. There was quite a bit of discussion over this:

A blue heron coming in for a landing:

There were a couple in this palm tree. Very hard to capture them, as they liked to stay hidden:

A pretty snag:

One of 2 types of plovers. Apparently there are only 2000 nesting pairs left in the country and we got to see several of them:

Can't remember what this guy is, but he (she?) was sitting at the mouth of the river waiting for lunch to swim by:

Here's someone else looking for lunch:

Guess this one wasn't interested in seafood:

Well, that was my day in the sun. Hope you enjoyed it!

Oh, now that's a place I want to go! Thanks so much for sharing. And, like me, thanks for taking the bird pics and not feeling the need to know the names! I try on occasion - but hey, I just enjoy them. And it sure looks like you had a great day - I did just following along.

Beautaiful. I've been enjoying all the pictures that are being posted of everybody's different journeys. Makes me want to get on the road more than ever. Gives me some ideas where to go when the time comes. Are you lady photographers using DSLR's or just regular Digital cameras. I would love to know.

Sue, I have both a DSLR and a point-and-shoot. I hauled the DSLR with me on Sunday & used a 70-300mm zoom lens. If I'm going somewhere that I know the scenery will be spectacular I use the "big" camera. The point-and-shoot is always in my purse, so I can grab it if necessary. Guess it just depends on what you want to accomplish with your pictures.
