WOW!!!! Storm of my lifetime

Postby avalen » Fri Aug 29, 2008 8:48 pm

Holy crap, we had the most bizaar storm ever last night that anyone has ever
seen. This was the talk all over town today. Lots of little storms in the area all
came together to form one big megastorm. It was like something from Hollywood.
The wind was 100 knot wind, hurricane force and the lightening was the most the
most eery thing I've ever seen. It never stopped!!!!! I MEAN IT NEVER STOPPED!!
Bolt, Bolt, Bolt, Bolt, Bolt, Bolt, and it continued for two hours!!! Continuous
lightening, never saw anything like it in my life and hope I never do again. Of
course the wind caused lots of damage, power outages and currently still almost
5,000 people without power. Tempe had just had some stadium dedication
last week on their new dome stadium for the ASU to do their games and its
flattened, totally gone, 8 million dollars to build and its gone. Lots of big trees
down all over and the wooden telephone poles just snapped off. All the storm
damage is so normal for a big storm but the big talk really was the bizaar eery
lightening that didn't stop. I will never forget it!!
If anyone wants to see pics from our local news you can go to myfoxphoenix.com
and they have lots of pictures.
I boondocked it from 9:30 to 1:30 last night, haha, my batteries at least gave me
light, and that help to comfort the dogs, especially Pixie, she was a trembling wreck.

Dang the worst storm I've ever sat thru was in Piggott AR. OOOOOWWWEEE it was a doozy! I was in the big truck, parked at a place cause I had to deliver out there next morning. My goodness what a storm. It was flash, boom, flash, boom, flash, boom. At one time all the hair on my body and head stood on end, there was a tremendous thunderous BOOM, the brightest flash I've ever seen and all I could taste in my mouth was a funky charcoal taste. ?? I think it might have been ? ozone ? I do know that there was a smell that kinda reminded me of gunpowder. And I'm really grateful that there was no smell of anything else!!! I sure never carried a washer or dryer on the truck! It hit the building where I was delivering to. I kept a close watch for awhile for smoke I know that. Next morning what a mess. The place was with out power, the lighting strike had fried the wires outside and inside. The loading docks were flooded, they were the kind where you have to back down in to them. The edge of the docks were just a little lower than the ground so when the drop down flooded the water went right inside the building. Good thing it was a place that made picture frames. They only had glass on the floor and the machines were all on legs. All the wiring for the machines ran across the ceiling and then down. Took quite awhile to get the place cleared out enough so that I could get unloaded. They ended up sending everyone home and only kept the maintenance guys, a couple foremen to unload me and that was it. They weren't gonna be doing any work that day. A few days later after that storm my starter and alternator both went out on the truck while still out for the week. Thank goodness there was a repair service that could come out to where I was parked! I think that lighting was the culprit for my electrical problems. ;)

Oh Ava I saw those clouds all across New Mexico and Arizona and NEVER got caught by enough rain to wash the dust off my car. The two nights I was in Tucson all around us were flash flood warnings but again no rain for me. I did think of you and wave on my way through AZ! Has that weather pattern shifted or are you still getting thunder storms?

I'm certainly glad you didn't get caught in it, these storms typically pass through
and keep on going to dissapate somewhere. The next day the storms usually
build up again and the process starts all over. It can be hot, humid and overcast
but sometimes nothing comes of it. This is our monsoon season and sometimes
it might pour rain on your house but the neighbors across the street stay bone
dry. Its always weird like that.
