Where's Liz? Days 5&6 PA & NY

Postby Liz » Fri Aug 29, 2008 8:26 am

August 27

Drove north through western PA on a road that was under construction, so driving was trafficous and not scenic. Sometimes ya just pick the wrong road, and there was no good place to pull off and choose another. When I finally got back on a nice country road, I ended up here, tired and ready to camp.

Twas not to be, for dogs were not allowed in the cg in this state park. But, the nice attendant transferred me to another park nearby that does allow dogs.

I’ll have to look this guy up, never heard of him.

Image

Corning, NY was on my route, so I stopped to have a look.

Image

This weird-looking glass sculpture greets visitors in the lobby. In addition to a museum & history tour, glassblowing demonstrations, and displays of beautiful glassware, you can even make your own glass thingy (choice of thingies). I didn’t take the time to do that, but did tour the gift shop.

Image

Next I entered the Finger Lakes region which is apparently wine country. I passed field after field of vineyards like this one sloping down to Seneca Lake, and plenty of wineries where I did not stop to sample.

The turn-off for this rest area said scenic lookout.

Image

I don’t know about scenic, but it was definitely aromatic. This farmer had just finished spreading manure on the field beside me.

Image

North of the lakes the land became rolling farmlands, cornfields and apple orchards.
At the end of Rte 14 north you come to Big Sodus Light on the shores of Lake Ontario. Built in 1870, it now houses a maritime museum.

The grounds were beautifully landscaped.

Traveled north along the scenic L. Ontario coastline past many apple orchards…so this is where they grow those NY state apples I buy in Publix in the wintertime. Stopped to camp at the first State Park along the coast to be sure to get a space so close to the Labor Day weekend. Today I’ll continue on that route with a couple of planned stops, then will camp in the Adirondacks and get to meet Cedar this weekend! On Monday I will visit an old friend from college (Haven’t seen her in at least 25 years). She lives in the same farmhouse she grew up in right on the shores of Lake Champlain in North Hero, VT. After that it’s on to my brother’s camp in NH. So, bye until I can get online again. Hope you’ve enjoyed the trip with me.

Ouch- sorry about the construction - but glad you did finally get out of it and had some beautiful scenery.

Have a great time this weekend and we'll see you when you get back on line - hopefully sooner, rather than later :)

Dang Liz you were in part of my old stomping grounds. LOL  I did a lot of stomping and carousing in Corning!!! I was born in Elmira NY. Old boyfriend of whom I have very fond memories was born in Watkins Glen NY. You have to have gone RT 414 from Corning to Watkins. All the time I lived up there I've only walked the actual "Glen" twice. And that was only going down not up that thing. Funny how we have so much in our own backyards and hardly ever appreciate it.
And yeah that area up there is famous for it's wines. Oh boy can ya have a time touring wineries.

Hey when you get up there to Cedar's? Give her a great big ol' hug for me. I use to run the big truck to Ticonderoga to the paper mill all the time. Should have made the connection before and we could have met up.

awwwwww,.... Echo,... you were in Ti at the I.P. mill? Gee,... we could have passed each other on the road,... i often shop in Ti for groceries, and misc. at the Walmart. And my cousin retired from there recently. We could have met for lunch or at least coffee or a "howdy!"

Liz, I really like the picture of the grape vines.
