Where's Liz? Galveston

On Monday we sadly said goodbye to Karen....you did a great job taking over for Beth and making this gtg a success.

Birdie and I stayed on to enjoy one more day in Port Lavaca.
Image

Roe and I took a long walk down the beach toward Indianola.
Image

Along the way I practiced my birding skills I’ve picked up from Birdie. Oh, there’s a red-eyed crested loony bird.
Image

I wanted to investigate this statue I’d passed coming in. I was surprised to learn it was the same LaSalle of LaSalle & Joliet fame. I knew he’d explored the Lake Champlain, Great Lakes & Mississippi River, but had no idea he’d been this far down the coast and started a settlement here.

Woke up this morning to a pretty sunrise...

After breakfast, Birdie and I headed north to Galveston. We took the scenic route.
Image

Wonder if this boat was washed this far inland during the last hurricane.

A nice little spot for lunch.

We explored some sights around Galveston...

We wanted to tour the Moody mansion, but got there as it was closing.

I’ll give you the peek-through-the-window tour of the garage.

We ate out at the Fisherman’s Wharf.

Birdie ordered this Tropical Margarita in your honor, Sparkle.
Image

We had a fondue thingy with shrimp & lobster...yummy.

Docked beside us was the Tallship Ellissa

On the road back, Birdie spotted this Louisiana Kite with his mouse catch. (Or was that Mississippi Kite?)

Back to our campsite at Galveston Island SP and another little walk to see the evening birds

and watch the sunset.

LOL - I quickly read "one-eyed", not "red-eyed"...that would have changed this picture...but not in the loony sense...

Come on Liz, that red-eyed crested loony bird is a member of the Grebe family. You held out on me and didn't tell me that you saw him this morning. I know, it is hard to remember all the 2, 3 and 4 strings of names. The Mississippi Kite was a beauty and the Green Heron was a good shot. Too bad the Scissortailed Flycatcher and the Kingfisher didn't hold still for you. Will try some more tomorrow, okay? Liz has added a bunch of birds to her ID life list this trip.

Was a great day, even driving the scenic route - okay girls, I got us turned around and Geraldine II (the second) and I got in a fight about which road to take, and she got all huffy. Then she, Geraldine II (the second), and Tomisina got into a bit of a talking frenzy on our tour of Galveston. Thank goodness Liz is so laid back. More adventures tomorrow!!!!! :?

Beautiful pics, Liz. I forgot to tell you, there is a lighthouse at Sabine Pass if you like that sort of thing. I've never been there, but my Dad has. Have a safe trip and keep up the good story and pics.

Unlike Birdie. I forgot to mention that she tried to rent out our sites in Port Lavaca to an unsuspecting couple who stopped to inquire.

WOW! I had no idea Galveston area was so beautiful and pristine-looking! And I love your pictures of that Moody place----who was Moody, anyway? I can see that he loved nice cars!

Your beach and bird pics are super to view----how nice it must be to have a bird expert with you rather than a bird book to identify the winged creatures! Sun pics are beautiful, too. I need to go there some day, for sure.

Thanks again for a great morning coffee trip to TX!!

Oooooh, wish I was still with you. I, too, didn't realize Galveston was so pretty. Did the couple like our Flamingo pink firepit?

Great tour. And, as usual, wonderful pictures!

Good thing Birdie doesn't check up on my bird pictures. I just post them. Actually, I have 2 bird books now and look many up - but some look too much like others - and it's seeing those magnificent birds and getting pictures of them that means more to me than the names. (I have to say that as I'm so bad at ANY names - Sparkle gets so frustrated with me regarding the flowers and plants.)

Love that margarita - did it taste as good as it looked?
