Say Goodbye to refrigerator!!

Postby retiredhappy » Tue Apr 06, 2010 3:32 pm

Well my refrigerator stopped working. At least it hung in there for our boondocking on the beach. My RV guy says I could replace the cooling unit (about $800) or replace the frig (about $1100). Chose to replace entire frig since its 10 years old. My "check" light never came on and all the other lights were working so didn't even know it had conked out until I got a snack out last evening and it wasn't cold. Naturally I had a freezer full of food which one of my neighbors put in her freezer. Dang, dang, dang. Just didn't need that expense right now.

It IS a good thing it didn't go out on your way down to the GTG, yall would have HAD to eat all that food, LOL. Will they be able to replace it before you have to leave for Silver City or will they do it there?

Well He11! You certainly didn't need that after all of the fun and shenanigans at the GTG! Just a suggestion, as long as you're at the service place, have them install a thermostatically controlled fan on the back of the unit. It's only about $30 and really really helps the unit in hot weather or whenever the sun is shining on that side of your coach. Helps to keep the inside of the reefer cooler on warm days, and you won't have to set your thermostat on the unit as high. Makes it a little more efficient and save a little propane when you're boondocking.
Only Irish coffee provides in a single glass all four essential food groups: alcohol, caffeine, sugar and fat.

Wow, that's no way to end such a fun trip!
Sure hope you can have of this all replaced before you have to head out again.
Hate to see you have to go to so much expense though :( .

Well, it's a good thing you've got that high paying job in Silver City, Karen  What a bummer, just when you think you're ahead of the game. But I agree, at least it was AFTER the gtg. Have heard good things about that fan Sharon told you about. New dog, new refrig, what else might be over that horizon :D . Hopefully the exchange goes well and you will be on your way to NM. carold

I replaced mine just over a year ago - also about 10 years old at the time. No fun. Feel for you. Did the same as you - could have fixed it - but for that couple hundred, figured it made more sense to get the entire new unit. I'm glad you were back before it happened. Easier there.

Sorry about the extra expense. Just think about how much you will enjoy the new one.

Ouch, sorry about that! So glad it didn't happen during the gtg. I'm happy with my new fridge after struggling all last summer with the old one (which I had paid for repairs just before leaving for the summer).

Our 5er is a '99 and I'm waiting for the same thing to happen any day. Already have the $$ tucked away.

Aahh shucks Karen. Don't suppose it was one box of wine too much do you? There was a lot of getting in and out of that fridge down on the coast. Sophie was trying to make sure you never did see her open that door. Hope Chris gets it fixed quickly for you. Should have come down here with Liz and me. We would have gone to PPL and found you a new rig. :P I have that box of wine that we could have celebrated with.

I guess refrigerators are the most expensive items in haulable RVs, yes? I can't think of anything else that would cost that much, other than perhaps an axle or something. Glad you can get it set for another thousands of miles!

Was lucky that I have money tucked away for repairs rather than pay for one of those insurance programs. Had one once and it cost me about $800 a year so I figured I was better off just putting that $$ away. Turns out it will be almost $1500 but gotta keep my wine cold. My daughter brought me one of those small refrigerators to use until my new one arrives hopefully on Friday.

Rainy, windy day here. I had better get going - errands to run.
