I'm on aircard, now what

Postby avalen » Fri Apr 02, 2010 1:51 pm

Well, I did get the aircard, and its on my computer, but I'm still using AOL?!?!
I figured it would come up as internet explorer, and that I'd be able to dump
AOL, so I'm confused. Guess I'll have to call verizon, (that nice lady that took
my money, gave me her card) hmm, gee, wonder why. I guess I have that
computer illiterate look on my face.
For now I'll do a little catching up on posts and then give that lady a call.
I do notice its much faster opening the pictures and stuff, so that is a
good thing.
Now, the story behind getting this device.............
I've had dialup since day one back in the early 90's and although the park here
where I live offers DSL, ($59) and a phone line ($22+) the phone bill was due
by today, and I only owed the one month but two days ago, they shut me off.
WTF?? they can't wait till the due date? Now, granted my bill has been late
each month but hey, it got paid before the next one was due. So, I'm on
the phone to make a payment and get the phone turned back on and they say,
ok, it will be $45 to reconnect (flip the switch) and a $100 deposit, and of course
the $22 for the phone bill.
I say......
I DON"T THINK SO, I'll take that $100 and buy myself an aircard and forget about
the landline.
makes perfect sense to me, although I'm spending just a little over what I was
before, its sort of worth it and if I can dump AOL, that will save me $11 more
a month. So thats my story and I'm stickin to it!

Congrats, Ava!

You should have somewhere on your computer, or can download, a different browser - Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Google Chrome. You don't have to use AOL or their browser at all anymore. Get online with your new aircard and then open the browser of your choice.

I know nothing about air cards. What is their monthly fee? Can you use it for a telephone line, too?

the aircard runs $59 a month and has worldwide capability, so if I'm in Canada or Mexico
its good there too. I do have internet explorer on my computer so how do I change the
settings to use IE as my default? I used to do that real easy with my windows98, but now
I've got XP and I don't know where anything is. It looks like today will be "fix" my computer
day, or getting to know it better!

Ava, You probably already have it, click on start, then look to see if on the far left toward the top it says Internet Explorer. I've switched to Firefox as my browser (Google and download) and Google as my home page but if I want I can click on IE and use it as a browser, seems like I don't get as much junk with Firefox

Hey everyone, it occurs to me that Ava will also want to cancel AOL as her Internet Service Provider, yes?

I did find it, and I changed the default to IE but don't ask me where I found it, I
couldn't tell you, I would just have to go searching again. But one thing I notice
is the forum page has a bit of different look to it, not all the pictures and avatars
show up, signatures don't show up, just little x's in the box where they should be.
I'm thinking its some kind of setting somewhere, maybe a forum setting ??

Besides indicating a new browser....if your e-mail was aol you may sign up for a free yahoo account or something similar.....

You probably need to run an IE update. You should find that under the Tools heading at the top. Also make sure you have the latest Adobe updates. Adobe.com should find that, I'm assuming.

AOL lets you keep your email even if you don't use them anymore.
I still have a years-old AOL address.

I also use Firefox as my browser. Supposedly much more secure.

once I get used to this new stuff, I'll cancel AOL but keep the aol net mail, (its free)
my aol billing just got paid so I'm good for a month on that. Pages look right now, I
got to thinking that I hadn't rebooted my computer since I installed the verizon thingy
so I think that helped. Feels like a little bit more freedom in the back of my mind,
cause all I would need now is electricity, and any good campground will have that.
One step at a time and for me its baby steps :D and maybe next year I can get a
laptop. I'm gonna have to check out that firefox thing, lots of people say good things
about it.
