Abbreviations

Postby AlmostThere » Sun Mar 21, 2010 6:03 pm

I think some of the newbies need to know some of the abbreviations we like to use. ( Soos, I know you hate these, but it's what most of us use). Everyone add to this list as I know I'll not think of all of them.

TT = tow trailer
MH = motorhome
genny = generator
DD = darling daugher
DS = darling son (guess it could be darling sister, too, but we generally will say my sister.
X = pretty much says it all (x spouse)
SIL = son in law or I guess sister in law, too ;)
BIL = brother in law
DIL = daughter in law
DH = darling husband

these are just a few right off the top of my head

good list, Lenora...

TT can mean travel trailer too. and generator can be gen.

A lot of it is understood by thinking of how the initials are used in the sentence's context. If something is spelled out earlier in a discussion it may be referred to by intitials later in the discussion. Often just to aid in quick typing.

the one that took me forever to remember was...
IIRC
means....If I recall correctly
IMHO....in my humble opinion
I know they serve a purpose for quick typing but I'd rather just type the
word itself. What does drive me nuts is reading the ones typed over a
cellphone cause there is no capital letters at the beginning of the sentence
and sometimes just a period instead of a space. I guess life has evolved
into something totally different. Do you suppose we could refer to it as
a mutation of the alphabetic code.

I always wondered what the "D" in front of the DS, DD, DH was? If Mitch wrote it, I assumed it meant Dufus (ie; DV) :lol:

The new codes and acronyms remind me of the shorthand I had to learn in highschool. I could never figure it out! Still can't!

Somewhere, on my dead computer, I have a list of hundreds of abbreviations. That shows the D in DD, etc as dear - but darling and dear are pretty much the same. I've also heard it called something else, but don't remember. TT has always been travel trailer for me also. Nice to remind people of what the abbreviations are.

As most of you who have known me for a while already know, I am the queen of not knowing abbreviations, including capitalized ones standing for government things and more-----and not only do I not understand them, I have absolutely NO intention of ever trying to know what they mean or use them! I make a couple of exceptions in this group, such as TT and GTG (travel trailer and get-together) as they have become sort of like words unto themselves. I suupose for those of you who text, those other abbreviations are also like words to you, but, to me, they are just Greek and shall remain just that. To call everyone 'Dear' this or that just makes me grind my teeth! Dear son, dear daughter, dear husband, dear anything? ACK! Why not just my son, or my daughter? And, believe me, I realize that I am the one out of order here, as the way of the future is to murder the written English language. It is part of the culture now, albeit, one part I refuse to participate in. So this is not a criticism of anyone but me----a stubborn old hag who refuses to bow to the new 'text' language! I have given up, usually, asking what something means in a conversation in the chatroom, as I am supposed to be able to deduce what the letters mean by how they are being used. As I usually cannot deduce, nor do I even want to scroll back into the conversation to try to figure it out, I just shut my mouth now so as not to aggravate those who are perfectly aware of what is being discussed, and to save me from being made to feel like an ignorant relic! So, if you think I am not understanding something being discussed, you are probably right on!

"D" could mean many things (ie; dingbat, dumb, doorknob, dufus, ditzy, dizzy, etc...) I was using "SO" for "significant other" (maybe should have used "ISO" for "insignificant other"! :lol: )
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)
