Yee-Haw!

I mentioned in the coffee klatch this morning that I had the delightful opportunity to go to the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show this weekend. Instead of unpacking my suitcase I thought it would be more fun to play with my pictures and share a few with you.

This two-week even is held at the Reliant Stadium and the surrounding buildings, making it absolutely huge. The main events are the Rodeo and nightly entertainment. The night I was there Toby Keith was the singer. Our seats were great -- we were in a VIP section -- so had lots of sitting room and even a kind of lounge if we wanted to sit outside of the arena but still see and hear everything. We stayed in the arena.

The Rodeo began with the Grand Entry (I think that's what it's called). All the cowboys parade in, followed by a woman galloping in with the flag. They even had fireworks INSIDE the arena!

Then there were all of the rodeo events. Because the Rodeo is 2 weeks long, and they do the events nightly and then add up their scores for a cumulative total. Here are a couple of pictures of bronco busting, chuckwagon races, and barrel racing:

We don't want to forget the Rodeo clowns and the valuable service they provide in keeping the cowboys safe during bull riding:

There were 2 "fun" events -- something called "Calf Capture" (I think) and then Mutton Busting. In the Calf Capture there were 28 high school kids trying to catch & bridle 14 calves. Those that got one received a $500 certificate for their own calf to raise and sell next year at the Rodeo. The Mutton Busting was done by 5 and 6 year-olds. They had to ride a sheep, hanging on for dear life. It was great fun watching both events:

It was a great evening, and I'd go again in a heartbeat. If you ever have the chance to visit Houston during Rodeo time it will be a day you won't forget.

Thanks for the pics, Laura. I've been to many a rodeo but never made it to the Houston one. Ronnie used to rodeo before his accident. Stinker used to forge his Momma's signature on the consent forms!

Wow! Now that's a rodeo and a half! Great pictures, Laura! Thanks for posting those. I don't know that I have ever been to a rodeo, actually. Our fairs up here have sort of mini rodeo events, but nothing like that one!

Great pictures and it looked like so much fun. Always knew you were a VIP  My sister and her DH were at the worlds largest rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater, Texas this last week where he got to milk a rattlesnake. 8-) carold

The grand entry is very impressive. Looks like a lot of fun. I've only been to one rodeo in Brush, CO with Carol when her son & gs were competing, but really enjoyed it. I also remember that camping at the fairgrounds was free.

I grew up on county fairs and rodeos. The Calgary Stampede is a huge event, also, only it's all outside. Great fun if you ever get up to Canada. Beautiful country, BC.
I'm so glad you got to experience that. Wow, it is a huge stadium! I miss a big rodeo. We just have a tiny one here over the 4th of July. Thanks for sharing.

That sure looks like a lot of fun. I've been to some county fairs and saw the livestock judging, and some barrel racing. Houston is quite the rodeo, but then everything is big in Texas. :D Thanks for sharing. Linda

Love the rodeo! I spent many years of my life attending rodeo's, every January was
Denver Livestock and Rodeo and then in July it was a trip up to Cheyenne for the
"Daddy of em all" Rodeo, and 4th of July it was the Greeley Stampede. Never could
get enough of those rodeos, course I always thought cowboys were so sexy, but
that does't mean I want one
Thanks for sharing those pictures, it brought back memories.

I went to a rodeo up here several years ago and there were so many good-looking cowboys! Real ones too! They were all from out west or down south. We don't have any real cowboys here, just cowboy wanna-be's.

Great pictures Laura! I used to love everything about rodeos until oldest son started riding bulls...never knew that 8 seconds could last soooooo damn long! I owe my sons life to one of those rodeo clowns and I will forever be grateful to that man. Take out the bull riding and I still enjoy a good rodeo! I regret the day that I caved and let that little 6 year old bugger do the mutton bustin'! Vicki...my son had to have a notary sign and stamp the permission slips for the high school rodeos along with the parental signature...luckily the only two notaries in town were good friends...he couldn't and didn't pull the wool over our eyes!
My mind works like lightning...one brilliant flash and it's gone.

Great pictures - I love rodeo - spent my high school years in Wyoming and the rodeo was the highlight of the year. My dad knew Casey Tibbs so I got to met him and pet his horse and take his picture. WOW - He was a champion for many years. And VERY sexy - especially to a 16 year old. Also always enjoyed the Nationals in Vegas - lots of tight jeans and big belt buckles - yum
