Yes, south Texas can be windy - as can Arizona, NM, etc etc. I happen to prefer TX, NM and AZ to FL but that's just me. And I love the gulf area of TX - will take the wind for the mild weather (glad not to have been there this year - as was cold, tho - but that seems to be all the US this year).
The winter jobs are a little more difficult to get - so start looking early. Some of them require you to have worked there a summer (because some of those southern locations are just as busy in the summer, but the workampers only want to go there in the winter). So keep looking at all the areas you might be interested in, send them emails and get details. If you take a job and don't like the location - make the most of it for the season - cuz it's not for your lifetime, but a season. And there's really no where I can think of I couldn't handle spending a season. There's so much of interest even in places I thought I'd never find anything! That said, the horror stories will more likely be if the people you work for don't honor their end. So that's where to make sure you know just what will be expected, hours you'll work, jobs you'll do, etc. Because if they don't hold up their end of the bargain, you ARE on wheels and nothing says you have to stay.
Don't get me wrong, I've never left a job yet - but I have the peace of mind of knowing that I could. And I wouldn't leave for some things that others would - I believe in keeping my commitments. However, there are employers out there that simply don't present the truth about what they expect. Then again, there are workampers that don't get the info first - ask the questions and know ahead of time.
