Where is Birdie? - Chiricahua Mountains

[Birdie]

Well, I have been house and pet setting over in the Chiricahua Mountains once again for my friends that own and operate The George Walker House. Have had snow 3 times since I arrived Friday, March 5th. No wild animals around, well okay there were three deer, but no javelina, bear, or mountain lion. Birds, birds, birds. Love of my life.

Saw this bird before I left Texas, but it is so just there in your face. It is a Norther Jacana. A Mexican specie that got lost last fall and is still at Choke Canyon State Park.



Look here at what I have managed to see this week:

The George Walker House front drive way with 2 inches of snow – not much but enough to make it cold.


The best for last – This is Tundra – she is the Walker House Official Greeter. A lovely boston girl. Her sister, Mischief, won’t stay still for a photo yet. I’ll get one of her. She is mischievous kitty.



Lots of fun, lots of birds, more snow than I bargained for, great time being here.

What a great way to begin my day, Birdie! Beautiful bird photos! My poor little chickadees and juncos and Canada Jays are struggling to fly in the heavy winds from the trees to my feeder.

You sure know your birds! Those photos are awesome! You should send those into magazines that specialize in birds (Birds & Blooms is one I know of. I am sure you know of more). They would love to have such beautiful photos! Up here we just have sparrows, robins, cardinals and grackles, with an occasional finch, blue jay and eagle thrown in. I should pay more attention, maybe there are more that I haven't noticed before. We used to have a lot of mourning doves (love their coo) but they passed a law a few years ago allowing them to be hunted, so I don't see or hear them anymore. What a stupid law!!

Birdie, in Dec of 2006 (with lots of snow) we stayed in Willcox and visited a lot of that area-the National Monument, Fort Bowie at Apache Springs, Faraway Ranch and the Pancho Villa Museum. Are you near that area?? carold

Yes, Paradise is fairly close to those areas. We are actually over the mountain from The National Monument. However, right now you can't get over the mountain as it is closed for snow/ice pack. Probably open in April if it warms up. Actually, you can drive on I-10 to the San Simon road and go south 29 miles on a marvelous (just kidding) gravel road and you are in Paradise. So you weren't that far away.

We have had lots of full-time RVers visit. Surprising how many are birders and/or photographers. Many Canadians have been here this week. They are staying at Rusty's RV Park between Rodeo, NM and I-10. That park is about 15 or so miles from I-10 but it has really large lot areas. Looks great as a place to stay and explore an area. It is on my map for my next trip out, even though it is off the highway.

Paradise has 12 full-time residents. The place I am at is a Bed and Breakfast that caters to birders, photographers, butterflyers (is that a word), and hikers. It is really very neat. The most attractive thing, outside of the birds, is the quiet. It is just so quiet, I can hear the bird wings of the woodpeckers, the hummingbirds, and the chip notes of most all of the birds. That is way kewl.
