General Stuff from Mexico

A week or so ago we stopped at a little farmer's market in a little bitty town. Not much there - only 2 stands with produce and the rest were mostly clothes and/or kids toys. But we did come across a "livestock" stand. Did a double take when I saw these - couldn't resist taking their picture.

A lot of the farmer's market sell baby ducks, chickens and bunnies - this was the first time I saw this.
Yesterday we went back into Puerto Vallarta and I bought me something - a Day of the Dead Huichol beaded doll. She is about 10 inches high. The Driver thinks I'm nuts - but I LIKE IT

Today we drove up the mountain to Tepic again. Last time we were there we had the back window latch fixed on Willie - cost US$ 24.00 Today we were just looking around. Saw this street sweeper

The stand on the corner behind him is selling sugar cane peeled and cut into chunks.
Though I'd share a small part of the mural in the Municipal Palace - It is huge - this guy must be 20 feet long

This one too - they are on either end of a long ceiling.

This is on an end wall - the three main faces are Zapata, Juraz and Villa

Then driving is always fun - this is a typical intersection in Tepic - notice everyone going a different way

Then going back down the mountain is always fun. This is the view from my window into the mirror - and yes he was that close.

Here's another picture of same truck - he had just passed us and is going around the truck in front - ON A HILL AND CURVE!
Then he was out of sight.

Tomorrow we leave Lo de Marcos so don't know when we'll have Internet again. Going to try to get ours working as we'll be stopping either in Tepic or Guadalajara where we'll have phone service. (tech support on a cell phone from Mexico $$$$$$$)

I saw something on TV once about the colored chicks. Can't remember why they do that (maybe to sell more of them) but after they molt, they lose all their color except for their beaks. They sure are cute tho! I can't remember how they color them either, but I think while they are still in the egg.

Love the murals....feel sorry for the chicks. Can't help but wonder if they are harmed in any way by the dye or whatever they use.

they are colored with food coloring http://www.talewins.com/humor/chickens1.htm not that uncommon here in the US around Easter

Thanks for sharing the pictures...when I saw the traffic picture made me glad that I am not there and driving...I would be a nervous wreck especially in a motor home.

The murals were beautiful and had such detail. I too wonder if the chicks are okay with the different colors they dye them. Hope they are fine.

Again I must say that there is no lack of color and superb art talent in even the tiniest of Mexican towns! I think the idea of brightening up things would work for many of us around here who have lived this winter in nearly total sunless, drab, dreary, overcast days! I wonder if Saranac Lake would go for that practice? I know that there are at least two bright, sparkly murals done by high school art students a number of years ago, done on old foundations and the side of a building in town, and they really do brighten up the area! I am not sure why they are not done any more....perhaps lack of interest or money.

Thanks so much for showing us yet another neat little town that you two are so adept at finding!

Personally, I prefer bright yellow, natural chicks, however! I have seen some colored ones around here every now and then, and they always make me feel sort of weird! (Yeah, weirder than usual!)

Just love your pics of MX and all the bright colors. I also like your little doll. The chicks not so much. Animal Cops on Animal Planet had a segment on colored chicks. They are illegal in NY and were taken away from the pet shop where they were being sold for Easter. They said that the eggs were injected with food coloring. While not being harmful to the chicks, it is considered a form of abuse. The chicks do outgrow the coloring in time. The pet shop was also fined.

That's where I heard about the colored chicks!! On Animal Cops! I just couldn't remember where I had heard it. I miss those shows. They aren't on much anymore.
