Almond Crusted Fish Taco

Here's what I had for dinner just now - Almond Crusted Fish Taco - maybe 8 carbs per taco (I only had 1). Topped with shredded lettuce and a dab of low-cal ranch dressing (because I was too lazy to make anything different in the sauce department). YUMMO.

I bought the almonds a couple of weeks ago and processed the heck out of them in the food processor. Dipped the fillets in a mixture of egg/cream/spices, then patted both sides with the almonds, placed them in a small amount of hot oil. Old El Paso taco shells = 6 carbs per shell. Then I figured a little carb for the egg and a little for the salad dressing and a little for the hell of it...

Sounds like a great meal to me. Almonds are great, but only a few at a time. The calories in them add up fast.

I, also, believe like Zeee - everything in moderation. I will never cut chocolate or ice cream out of my diet. But I can cut how much of it I eat out - and be happy now with a couple dark chocolate hershey kisses instead of an entire candy bar. And if you get enough exercise, you need some of the carbs. I love breads and won't cut those out either - and I happen to love the crusty French and Italian breads. But I don't need to eat the whole loaf (like I was able to do in years past).

As to salt and sodium - not everyone needs to watch it - so be careful that you don't fall into a category where you need it and listen to all who say it should be gone. I have a friend that gets light-headed and to combat it NEEDS salt. Same as gaterade and many of those "athletic" drinks are all sodium. The athletes need to add it back to their systems after exercising. Most of us shouldn't be drinking those tho. (I rarely use salt - have the same salt shaker for 5+ years now - without refilling it. And I'm one who sometimes has a salt craving - I have low blood pressure and when it spikes down - salt helps me).

Processed foods - read the labels. They aren't as bad as they used to be. MSG isn't in everything anymore (and I look - as I get headaches from that stuff).

Moderate with food and EXERCISE. And I HATE exercising - but I try to walk, walk, walk - as that's exercise. That's my credo. And don't do as I have been while in MX and eat too many sweets. They sure can be yummy, though.

Beth, I'm curious why you think processed foods aren't as bad as they used to be, maybe you don't see MSG on labels any more but look for the following.
The following substances contain the highest percentage of factory created free glutamate, with MSG containing 78%:

I didn't know that! I normally have very low blood pressure (85 over 50) so maybe that is why I crave salt! Very interesting!

For anyone interested, I saw a commercial last night on TV that you can sign up for Weight Watchers Online for free. Not sure for how long that offer stands, but I'm about to check it out. I did ww a few years ago (probably close to 10) and was successful in dropping almost 20 lbs. Now, I need to drop it all again. sigh

Just checked...free isn't exactly free...but might still be worth it in the long run. They have several plans available.

Barbie, Yes, that could be why you crave salt - AND why you might NEED it.

Yes, I know all the ways msg shows up in foods and on labels. MANY manufacturers have been listening and it's not being used by all of them. Just like there were very few gluten free products just 10 years ago - and today there are many.

That said - for those of you who quit using sugar (I almost use none except when baking) what are you using as a substitute. As in most things, I believe using a natural product (sugar) in moderation over using many "made" products that replace it. That said, I've started drinking something with Splenda - because of the calories - but I still believe natural products outshine those made in almost all cases - if we can moderate usage.

If you're worried about health, I suggest you quit buying ANYTHING scented. That is one of he biggest allergy triggers for people, and no one wants to believe it. So they scent everything - including toilet paper - and people wear perfumes so strong that some people can't bear to be in a room with them. Funny, I like my perfume, but wear it so rarely because I know it's bad. I can't handle a minute in a store with too many smells without leaving with a headache. Talk about the unnatural products used to make the scents.

I'm with you on the scents Beth, why does everything have to have a smell! I particularly hate the smell of fabric softener why in the world would people want to walk around smelling like laundry. I rinse my clothes in cheap white vinegar, softens them and leaves no smell.

In Marin County, CA restaurant patrons are able to choose fragrance-free seating thanks to the efforts of the Citizens for a Toxic-Free Marin.

How wonderful! I walked away from a delicious half-eaten steak in a restaurant once.... People arrived and were seated near me and there was a heavy scent of perfume. I started wheezing immediately and didn't have my inhaler with me. I nicely explained to the people that I had asthma and would they mind taking a table farther away... they were quite huffy and said NO!. So I asked the waitress who had seated them,.... she said NO,.... so I got up and walked out leaving my food. I did stop and pay for my dinner... and they didn't even offer a discount,.... my parting shot was that I would never return and would tell othes. Living up to my statement, I have never gone back to that restaurant. Wilderness Inn in Wilmington, NY. Kudos for Marin County! :D

Here's an example of a food that I call processed or grocery store fast foods: Groton's Tilapia - and I love it - low fat, no sugars - I add a potato or rice or soup and a vegie and/or salad - voila dinner that I love.

The Groton's tilapia is there - and I haven't checked out the ingredients on the others - and yes, you always should - but I'm going to probably try out the Chcolate Cheerios. Have been considering trying them since I saw them in the store. I mean - kill my sugar/chocolate craving with a meal? Sounds good to me.

I'm glad others hate all the overly scented stuff and people, too. I'll stick with my unscented detergent and unscented fabric softener. I truly believe most Americans must think they stink to use so many scented products - and I think the scented products might be making them stink :)

Oh MY!

I have to say I am one who LOVES scented things of all sorts! I love my clothes softener, soaps, scented candles, electric scents you plug in, balsam pillows and scented things of all kinds. ( HOWEVER----certain perfumes make me gag, and I have to leave the room at school when anyone wears a HEAVY-DUTY gaggy perfume! The ones that smell to me like what I would imagine would be whore house perfumes!)

Smells have always been a BIG part of my life, and I can smell a scent in micro-whaterveryoucallsmellsunits-----can identify a smell within a mile away, sometimes. I can smell mice, bears, racoons, porcupines, dogs, cats, people, urine of all types, poops, sweat, propane gas, smoke of all sorts, dead things, odors that have once been a part of my life, even when I was a baby, paints, foods, mold, all types of wildflowers from huge distances, and on and on. I think, if I got down on all fours, I could track a person like a bloodhound!

The only times that smells really get to me are when I've been in the woods for a week or more, and come back to civilization-----humans and their daily smells they cause overwhelm me after being so wild-oriented! But pleasant ones still are appreciated by me, such as clothes softeners and my favorite perfumes. (Musky ones)

Most scents, smells, odors, other than cigarette smoke, don't affect my asthma. Ciggie smoke makes me wheeze like a dying person!

I know it wasn't me at the Wilderness Inn, Cedar, as I would have moved! But I used to eat there often in the old days!

Smells are me!

I have an extremely sensitive nose and the slightest smells can make me start sneezing. The only purfume I can handle at all is musk scent (probably why I love the smell of ferrets! :lol: ). I steer clear of purfume counters, avoid air fresheners,etc. Altho, I found some "smoke eater" candles that have very nice and effective scents in light fruit and floral aromas that don't bother me if I don't leave them burning for too long. Also can't stand cigarette smoke (second or third hand) I used to get so mad at my mom when I picked her up to go out somewhere and she just dowsed herself in purfume before getting in the car. I had to open all the windows to air the car out and my nose and eyes still burned for hours afterward! I also prefer men who don't wear cologne for the same reasons. Do love the smells of food tho!!! I love the smells of the State Fair with all the food vendors cooking, deep-frying, baking, grilling, etc. The combination of smells is just heaven! (Oops! Sorry! Forgot this is the "healthy thread"!)
