The Grand Canyon idea: Watkins Glen, NY - it is an awesome place and last I knew there was camping there, too. Vermont state parks are wonderful. And Maine is my very favorite place to visit (in the summer, that is - my Nana lived in Maine and breaking ice off the surface of a bowl isn't my idea of fun!).

Okay, so we who reside out here in sunny Cal have to resort to bribery to get visitors? All right. I don't have all the amenities that Sharon has, but I do have a large graveled yard, a 100 ft. extension cord and an outside water spigot. Is that enticing enough? No? How about Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, San Diego Zoo, Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear, Joshua Tree Nat'l Park, Palm Springs Tramway, Hollywood, Living Desert Museum, and some of the best white sandy beaches you'll find anywhere? Both Sharon and I live within 45 minutes of the ocean, the mountains, or the desert. Take your pick. AND we can offer the occasional rocking and rolling ground!

We were at the Falls last summer.....took the kids and grand-kids....stayed on the US side....lots has been done since we lived in Niagara Falls 33 yrs. ago....nice parks and walking trails to see the Falls...have been on both sides and use to favor the Canadian side until this last summer....gone are the empty factories, and slums....the Seneca Indians have a large casino/hotel complex there for your gambling pleasure....touristy shops, and eateries i.e. Hard Rock Cafe....close by is the Buffalo Zoo, and a aquairium and a water park......so if you don't want to deal with crossing the border, lots to do there on the US side.....Now since we camped closer to my family's farm down state, I don't know about the campgrounds near Niagara Falls...oh, almost forgot about Ft. Niagara, and the wine country, too.....For the life on me, I can't remember a great state park north of Alfred NY that we use to go to when we were kids, so when my case of CRS is over, and I remember it, I'll post it for ya'....

PS My CRS is over!!! Lechworth State Park is the name....camping, cabins, Big Gorge, lots of history.....hiking trails....whew!!! Remembered while helping Ernie put gas in the generator.... :? Go figure!!!

Like I said...I'm already packed (aka tent) and ready to go! Love California! Maybe I could find my perfect RV out there! I've seen a lot of them for sale in SoCA.

Oh wow!!! So glad to hear that they have finally done something on this side of the falls! Maybe they finally got sick of seeing all the tourist dollars going to the Canadian side! LOL

And yeah Watkins Glen is really pretty. Way to much of a walk to go from bottom to top and back down again. But they have shuttles that will take you to the top and then you can walk down. They close in the winter of course as the trail and steps are way to dangerous with snow and ice. But an X-boyfriend (who lived in Watkins), me and another couple snuck up there and walked quite a bit of the trail. OMG what a hairy trip that was. Would never advise any one to do that! Nice campground right across from the lake that you can stay in too. If you don't mind the cold water? You can swim in the lake. That blasted lake is freaking cold year round! Took a scuba course one time in my mid teens, they used the lake for practice. Don't remember exactly what month it was? I know that there was snow around, but Gods! I could get into the water ok with my wetsuit to help but the water was so frigid that I never could get my head under water. As soon as the water hit my temples the pain was just to much. Nope I'll take warm water swimming any day. Never did get my cert from that class. The instructor took off and disappeared with the fee money before the class was done with. ~sigh~ Tons of winerys up there with tours and tastings. During the season they sell the grapes at roadside stands. Oh Yum! Now my mouth is watering. And of course there is Lilydale NY. Have always wanted to go there but haven't made it yet. I will tho!!! It is a village of psychics. http://www.wnyhikes.com/lilydale.php Someday I will get there!! Heard about the place from another trucker who's girlfriend went there all the time.

Yeah NY is a beautiful state. Funny how ya view and forget about your own back yard!!

ps. had to come back and do an edit. if your interested this is the new addy link for Lilydale NY. http://www.lilydaleassembly.com/

Hello from Connecticut,

Don't forget you've got sistahs in the area, and we have wheels that can take you to NYC, Boston, Tanglewood, Newport, as well as all the beautiful scenery. Just adding a few more options.

Lori, have you thought about having the PA GTG a little in Sept. My August is filling up and I think I will be out of the country from 8/23 to 9/14, and I would really like to GT again.

If you get over to Watkins Glen, suggest you wander on down to Lodi and visit Wagner Vineyards.

I had the honor of being at the grand opening of the winery back in the 1970s. (My best friend at the time was a Wagner and her family had been growing grapes for Taylor for three generations then. It was her brother's idea to open an estate winery.) I Truly fell in love with that part of NY.

Niagara Falls is still definitely worth seeing and also go back to see it at night all lit up. Lots to do and see as well and the KOA is still a great place to stay and near everything. Was there last summer. have fun.

Thanks to everyone. I have put together a rough plan and with the Rukus in the Mtns on my radar may have to adjust a little but it's looking good. In addition to the falls, can't miss Clayton & the 1000 Islands. Gosh, so much to see/do. It's fun researching.

Oh yes,... go to the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton and take the ride on the river in the antique mahogony boat,... wonderful experience. And the boat cruise throught the islands goes out of Alexandria Bay.

We loved 1000 Islands as well as Watkins Glenn (and Echo, somehow we managed up and down-and boy did my muscles cry out "Why are you torturing us, what have we ever done to deserve this" ) The Wineries around the Finger Lakes are great. Can't think of anything we haven't liked while traveling that area. carold
