This thread didn't start out so healthy, did it? Might have to start it over after Valentines Day...

Um, I actually use and like the whole grain pasta, but don't know if it's actually any better for me than the regular stuff.

I gave up added salt years ago when dh was diagnosed with diabetes. Look for low sodium labels and cook without salt. I've gotten so used to it I'm very sensitive to sodium in foods (in restaurants, for example). I found a cookbook for diabetics back then and used some of those recipes....to make my own spaghetti sauce, for example, and found them quite good. A stir-fry recipe using low sodium soy sauce (which still has plenty of sodium) was one of my favorites.

As I already mentioned, shop the perimeter of the store for fresh foods and avoid processed food with all that added sodium. And yes, read the labels on meats for added sodium.

mmmm, along time ago..I did the Vegan routine...not that there's anything wrong with it..(hahaha) Yes, I did the Soy and all it's goodies..even went to Dr Dean Ornish program (Reversal of Heart Disease) sad to say..."I failed"...yes, I had the highest cholesterol in town...my liver made it faster than I could digest it....sooooooooooooooooooo... I became chemically bound...(can ya see those ropes).. well, I did try very hard..3 full years of eating nothing but plants, veggies and all types of soy...spent more money in Health food stores..bought in LARGE quantities...as I traveled and found it difficult to find these treasure....For me.. well.. I did get some health benefits.. I had to take supplements as I was lacking in other vitamins......

Ok... my story is different than others I'm sure and all or maybe none will even bother...but what I'm saying is simple.."Don't stress out on what or what not..do things in moderation...drastic changes make for big impacts all way round... Oh yeah and I loved the book by Dean Ornish..MD (Cardio ) Eat More Weight Less...mmmmm wanna bet... :lol:

I found for me.. the Mediterranean Diet worked best with even my Diabetese..Simple veggies and fish..(not that I'm a big eater of it) was filling and tasty..cause boy without the flavor it really gets bad... I don't eat much at all of red meat..but I do turkey and chicken and that other white meat..not much fried foods ..but every now and then... YEP I go for the Big Event..a treat...so far and few in between..but I do watch my salt..I keep it low

I do use Whole Wheat Flour unbleached more in cookies and some cakes..and I use Applesauce instead of oil in the batter (when needed) I also do Egg whites...and I use 7 grain or better in breads..or make my own...(not yet on the peasant bread but getting close)

And as far as that Pasta ..well.. I was raised on pasta...forget about that other stuff... but I heard tell the half and half version is somewhat better...I'll get brave one day and give it a try..

Again Mitch... just grab a little from this and a little from that..and walk don't run.. You'll be fine...I believe that..

Yep,..... several hours later and I'm still fine! This was a particular boy that has come a long way .... dropping a major bad attitude he had when he came to our school a year ago. It was a pleasure to compliment him.

Over the years I've tried almost everything made with soy, to combat hot flashes, and "ack", is right! Sorry any soy fans, just can't hack it.
Go for "whole" wheat, not 100% wheat. Just read that there is a big difference. I've tried cooking with whole wheat flour and end up with heavy bricks. Some recipes you can use a combo of wheat/white.
I'm all for adding some 'heart healthy' recipes in our recipe area. These past few day's posts prove we need to be taking better care of ourselves and we are such great supporters for each other.
And I'm with you, Janet. I use whole wheat pasta and it's fine.

This is a link about soy products and has recipes.

I posted this I thought earlier but then didn't see it on the thread so trying again. I also suggested the Mediterranean diet and that if you wanted I could shop for you and meet you some place. We have local organic beef and bison and pork grown without antibiotics etc. available here. I'm sure we could keep it frozen for you to get back to the wilds of Tennessee. Oh organic eggs too the chickens are even given Willard Water! I'm not kidding.

It's on the other thread - Happy Pills Aren't Working Anymore!! Whew...thought we were both losing our mind!

But that sure doesn't mean we can't meet up for some healthy boring lunch in Paducah someday in the near future, eh?

Well I don't know about Vickie with ice cream or beans? And altho I had doubts last night? I'm still alive to tell ya that it wont match what Kelly was doing last night here in the screen house! Even she couldn't stand her self. We were taking turns coughing, laughing, choking, laughing....well you get the picture. We eat whole grain pasta and breads. Never have really gotten into trying the soy thing. I am trying to eat more fresh fruit/vegi's and less beef and more chicken, pork and fish.

What I struggle with is finding good healthy snacks...hubby likes his chips so I am trying to find alternatives to that. Any suggestions are definitely welcome.

I've always liked the Mediterranean diet too when it comes to thinking about diets.
But I do eat alot of fruit, some veggies, a little chicken or turkey and only a little
hamburger on occassion. But I do love the pasta's as well and I never worry about
what kind of flour, guess I was just never taught to look at that part.

I heard one of those TV chefs being interviewed, and he was asked how he keeps so trim, being around delicious food all day. His response was simple: "I don't eat anything white."

That would be a great thing to try. Gone are:

Sugar
Potatoes
White bread
White rice
Milk & milk products
Eggs??? (the shell and yolk are white).
Would that include white onions? And garlic?

I know the healthiest thing I can do is eat lots of vegetables -- as many colors as possible. Deep green leafy vegetables, squash, sweet potatoes, salads, red peppers ... Mmmmmm ... And garlic. LOTS of garlic.
