You know.... I'm wondering if it's more than coincidence that Mitch and Bill Clinton are BOTH having heart problems at the same time. What yall think?

Wow. This is a powerful thread, and Mitch, you've been hit with an emotional snowball. I can see why you dove into pizza and wine. Sometimes I just go to bed. But I cannot agree enough with Soos (you are such a WISE woman). For me, action is its own comfort and encouragement. God bless.

Mitch, sometimes you just have wait it out. Accept " I feel like shizzydit" and it will pass. Sunshine and walks help me. I think it is more the sunshine and of course chocolate. You have had more than your share and you are entitled to pout for a while. Hang in there.

I hope by now you are able to see a bit of a silver lining in the black cloud hovering over you. All these negative things happening at once is hard to cope with. Isn't this forum a wonderful place to find comfort, love and courage? I hope all goes well with your heart procedure and that you will soon be back to your old self. Cheryl :) :)

PeggyinCT said “Then we can start a better health thread on the forum and hold ourselves accountable for taking care of ourselves.”

I’ve wanted to post about this topic for some time. Ladies, most of what the majority of people eat isn’t really food, at least it isn’t the food your grandparents ate and grew in their gardens.

Maybe some of you saw the Oprah show when she talked with Michael Pollan or saw him when he was on the Dr. Oz show. He was pretty straight forward with what has happened to our food supply. He said “Mass-produced foods line the shelves of nearly every grocery aisle. A lot of what you see in the supermarket I would argue is not really food," "It's what I call edible, food-like substances." The show was called Food 101 and here is a link to read about all that was said. http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/The-Trut ... ael-Pollan
This is a link to Dr. Oz’s show also with Michael Pollan about where your food comes from. http://www.oprah.com/oprahradio/Where-D ... -Come-From

In another web site I read this.
“According to a recent study at the University of Colorado the nutrient density of food has declined significantly over the past 100 years. In fact nutrient density has declined approximately 40-60% over the past 100 years. That means that our food today typically has 50% fewer nutrients compared to the food that our grandparents ate.”

This is because our food is grown in soil that has been leached of nutrients and grown in chemicals. The seeds have been altered so it isn’t your imagination that food doesn’t taste the way it used to. Here is a link to read why.
http://www.greenlivingtips.com/articles ... seeds.html

I hope you are all outraged at what has happened to our food and outraged at all the health problems that are a result of all the changes. And if you really want to loose weight rent the movie Food.Inc! You may never eat chicken, eggs or beef from the supermarket again.

On a brighter note there is really good food available and Mitch you'll find lots of yummy items besides salad for breakfast. Look for a Whole Food Store, a food coop or a farmers market in your area.

I WISH there was a Whole Foods around! My food universe is WallyWorld and Kroger - that's it. Tennessee is among the top 5 Most Unhealthy States in the country (Vickie's state is worse - ha ha ha ha ha (said in the child's sing-song way)), and groceries must cater to their customers' wants to stay in business.

In my opinion, the most difficult thing to control, BY FAR, is sodium. It's everywhere, and in great quantities! Now, even most WallyWorld beef cuts are injected with the stuff. Certainly all their chicken is, since I started looking several years ago. Well, at least with the fowl, it takes a step out of the preparation process - no need to brine - it's all pre-brined!! A few years ago, I was trying to lose weight, so I ordered a McDonald's Grilled Chicken, no sauce. OMG - I, a huge salt lover, could barely eat it from all the sodium. Another of that sandwich has never since passed my lips.

This has been a very interesting thread. I'm glad I had a Pizza 'n Wine Breakdown! (well, I was until the next morning...) You guys are great - supportive and smart - what a combination! Thanks!

It's not just Wally world's beef that is injected, if you read the labels on all the fresh meat at the supermarkets you'll find most have been injected even pork. How far are you from Nashville, I'll check there and Paducah. Are there any farmers in your area or a small place where cattle and pigs are taken to be processed for freezers? Maybe they know someone who is growing if not organic at least someone who is raising grass fed beef. It's the corn that makes cattle sick so then they have to give antibiotics. If you can't find any let me know, I can get some for you here and meet you somewhere. We could keep it frozen long enough for you to get it back to TN safely. I can 'truck' food to you guys in the wilds, just send me your shopping list!
Sodium IS everywhere, they are sneaky with additives now in all the processed food as they know people look for MSG so they have other names for it.

Thanks, BJ. I don't eat too much beef, actually. I'm a chicken person, and not a lot of that, either. And I have found a 'natural' chicken that has not been injected (so the package says). I've had the fish (it was catfish, not the bass) from our pond once (our neighbors caught and cleaned them for us - George just catches and releases, being citified and all). It's wonderful, but we can't do that very often or there wouldn't be any left!!

I don't think everyone realizes that beef is now being inject with salt water! They called it a "flavor enhancer". I call it a "profit maker"...12%-15% of the price you pay is salt water! Grrrrr...

What are other names for MSG they're trying to sneak past us? So, would this be a true statement - on the nutrition label, sodium is listed per serving; MSG is not. So the bad stuff could be worse than the per serving of sodium in the label? (did that make any sense?)

Well you certainly have sufficient reason to be feeling low...and your reaction is normal and understandable. From reading all the posts...it sounds like you have already gotton past the worst.

When I first read the post about your diabetes and the way you already took control and lost so much weight I was very proud of you....you've already shown great strength. I'm glad you did not ignore your heart symptoms. As others have said, you must take care of yourself first. When I was caring for my disabled husband, I awoke one night with terrible "gas pains," or so I told myself. I rationalized it because, "I could not leave my husband alone to go to the hospital," didn't want to trouble my neighbor who had to work in the morning, etc., etc. So I sat up in a recliner until the pains subsided and then forgot about it. Three months later as part of my annual physical, my mild heart attack showed up on the ekg.

I had bouts of depression during those years, and later going through cancer treatment. The biggest help when in the midst of the downer was exercise....just a few minutes brisk walk (or 10 minutes on the slowest speed on the treadmill that was all I could do when in pain) was enough to get the brain chemicals working to alleviate the depression. Make yourself do it.

Grocery shop the perimeter of the store....produce, fresh fish, etc., minimizing the processed foods.

I make no apology, as others have thought of quotations, some scriptures come to my mind that have been helpful to me:

When Paul prayed 3 times for his "thorn in the side" to be removed from him, his answer from the Lord was: "My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness." Most glady, therefore will I glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me....for when I am weak, then am I strong." (1 Corinthians 12: 9-10)

"I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13)

But by far, one of the greatest gifts is this forum of caring friends who will support you (even Vickie), and make you laugh through the tears.

Liz, you certainly have had your share of the stuff so many of us have gone through!
How's your health now? What do you do for it?

I sure don't know what God has in store for me, but I hope it's not to take me away from George at this stage in his life.

Well when and because I couldn't control what was happening to me (other than following the drs. recommendations...the outcome was still up to God), I turned it all over to Him in faith and He gave me a peace about it that helped me through. After all, for those that love the Lord, it's all gain. I just know that he will never leave us nor forsake us, nor leave us comfortless. He knows your needs, and your concerns about Geo.

Today I am in pretty good shape, for the shape I'm in. Sometimes I follow a healthy diet, sometimes I fall back into chocolate. Sometimes I exercise every day, sometimes I skip days at a time. I seem to do better when traveling, as I am farther from my kitchen, and closer to the trails. I have some residual issues from the chemo that impact a little. I see my oncologist every 6 months, my cardiologist once a year, my gp every 6 months.

I'm going to live forever....so far, so good.
