a note about Roaming (Verizon info)

a note about Roaming (Verizon info)

Postby avalen » Sun Jan 31, 2010 11:31 am

came across this on another forum and thought it might be helpful to
share this info. This applies to Verizon cell phones and laptops, but I
would think other servers would have something equilivant.
For Verizon folks.........
When your traveling and roaming into different cell towers, you need to update you cellphone
to let it know where you are. To do this dial *228 and that will take care of it, however, if you
have a laptop (also Verizon) you need to do the same but the procedure is different. Verizon
tech support says this is how you do it.......

it is just as important to update your USB modem as it is your voice phone. Simply:

- Go to Verizon Access Manager and choose "Options."
- Choose "Activation."
- You will get a warning to turn off the modem.
- Say "yes."

VZAM will then run the equivalent of *228 on your modem. You must do this in a "native" Verizon area.

Other folks have said that with an EVDO router, I guess you take the card out and reinsert
to scan the towers???? Not savvy on this computer stuff and traveling but thought the
Verizion info would be helpful to someone.

My Verizon aircard periodically updates itself. On my phone I do the #228 about once a month or when I'm traveling even more often.

Karen does your phone automatically change time zones for you? I'm asking cause I have never had to update my phone while traveling. Never had a problem with Sprint with something like that. At David's house the Sprint broadband stick I am using for the laptops was on roaming. The phones were also on roaming But I never got a charge as I have unlimited roaming on the phones and as long as I don't go over 5gb of roaming on the laptop it's kool. And 5gb is a lot of data for usage.

I think the only time I might have a problem is if I were to go to MX? Use to use my cell in CAN before I got the unlimited roam but the charge wasn't bad. And while way up north in ME super close to the border after getting the unlimited roam I never had a charge even while bouncing off CAN towers.

I'll have to ask what would happen if I went to MX??? ;)

Only thing I would like to do now is make it so that both of us could use the internet from the same stick. But Sprint says that while they can fix that up for me? It's rather pricey. Suckers are getting enough of my money now!!

back when I did travel and with my old phone, I used to just turn it off and turn it back on.
That was about 5 years ago so maybe the procedure has changed, and when I get a laptop
I'll have to find out the procedure for the times cause thats a few years away yet (before
I ever get a laptop).
