I packed up and headed across the street to see the Gardens and the Sculptures.....Lots of Sculptures......SO BE WARNED.....
The grounds were purchased by the Huntington's (the rich guys that built Atatyla) and created a beautiful space for art and lovely pensive gardens. Some of the sculptures are those of Anna but most are from artists from around the world.....There are a few inside galleries but everywhere you looked outside as you walked around were statues and occasional poems. I particularly like this one. KInd of reminded me of some travelers I know.....
This was part of the sculpture that represented the Huntington's with books and animals around them that were such a big part of their life......I liked the Deerhound best.
And what those old rice fields look like now.....
Remember those bears that Anna kept for models....
Over at the house, near the stables there was another blurb about the horse that Anna got to model for this sculpture. Apparently it was a starving stallion on its lat legs that she found locally. Initially she even had to create a sling to help support him, he was in that bad of a condition. By the time the sculpture was completed the horse had been rehabilitated to some extent anyway and was able to live out his life "out to pasture."
Remember that straight road that the Huntington's built coming out from their home....here is another section of it across the gardens heading to the boat dock.
I apologize for the picture taking......these are only a small part of what the grounds hold....and the ones that I liked best. And as you might have guessed each stature has one of those signs.....telling you who made it, etc.....But some of them didn't need a sign to be remarkable. It always makes me think about art and artist and how they choose their mediums.... Several of these artists were noted for working across different mediums at different times in their lives....
Okay, I just liked these cypress knees...
