Interesting and informative. Good info - I like the "don't worry about it" - is my attitude sometimes when it probably shouldn't be. But has worked for me so far. Tell him thanks from all of us.

When the boat is connected to shore power, it draws about 20 amps just to run all the systems. When and if the AC kicks on the current draw jumps to around 30 or 40 amps. I have never noticed the cable even getting a little warm. The thing about coiling the cable is related to the the inductance that is present when wire is formed into a coil. Now throw in a little capacitence caused by the space between the wires in the cable and it can form a L/C circuit, (Inductor/ Capacitor) and you have a "tuned circuit" which can, depending on alot of other factors cause additional resistance.....In other words... don't worry about it..

You had me until capacitence....then my brow furrowed...knowing I was heading into "duh" territory. Thankfully, the words "don't worry about it" appeared, like a light shining (on the confused idiot).

So, I asked my friend Blake to 'splain in plain English. Here is his response...LOL - I don't think he knows how...I'm going to stick with "don't worry about it."

Hey there ya al'

Didn't know I was going to be a national electronics teach.....LOL

It's hard to explain in "plain English".
This all based on AC circuit electronics which is alot different than DC circuit electronics. AC electronics is alot like Radio Frequency stuff (radio).
A coil and a capacitor forms a tuned circuit. If the amount of inductance and capacitance happens to be the exact amounts that will form a tuned circuit at 60 cycles then it could look like an added resistence to the power which would cause heat. The chances of getting the coil just the right size to be the values needed for a 60 cycle tuned circuit would be unbelieveable.....

That's why I said " don't worry about it".......

Just got off the radio with Ken. He and Donna were heading out to the hot tub.... it was 47 deg there...it's 9 here right now......
