Brookgreen Gardens...and Sculptures

Postby BirdbyBird » Thu Jan 28, 2010 9:21 pm

After I pulled myself away from the beach and the dogs were sleeping off their morning walk...
Image

I packed up and headed across the street to see the Gardens and the Sculptures.....Lots of Sculptures......SO BE WARNED..... :o
The grounds were purchased by the Huntington's (the rich guys that built Atatyla) and created a beautiful space for art and lovely pensive gardens. Some of the sculptures are those of Anna but most are from artists from around the world.....There are a few inside galleries but everywhere you looked outside as you walked around were statues and occasional poems. I particularly like this one. KInd of reminded me of some travelers I know.....

This was part of the sculpture that represented the Huntington's with books and animals around them that were such a big part of their life......I liked the Deerhound best.

And what those old rice fields look like now.....

Remember those bears that Anna kept for models....

Over at the house, near the stables there was another blurb about the horse that Anna got to model for this sculpture. Apparently it was a starving stallion on its lat legs that she found locally. Initially she even had to create a sling to help support him, he was in that bad of a condition. By the time the sculpture was completed the horse had been rehabilitated to some extent anyway and was able to live out his life "out to pasture."

Remember that straight road that the Huntington's built coming out from their home....here is another section of it across the gardens heading to the boat dock.

I apologize for the picture taking......these are only a small part of what the grounds hold....and the ones that I liked best. And as you might have guessed each stature has one of those signs.....telling you who made it, etc.....But some of them didn't need a sign to be remarkable. It always makes me think about art and artist and how they choose their mediums.... Several of these artists were noted for working across different mediums at different times in their lives....

Okay, I just liked these cypress knees...

Wow Tina, those were great! I'm not much of an art person, I guess I don't know much about it, but I know when I like something and those were great. Thanks for taking the time to get these pics loaded for us.

Breath taking. I can't begin to imagine the over all beauty and serenity of being there in the gardens.

I am amazed at some ppl's talents! I feel so inadequate after seeing all that! Those cypress "knees" look like colorful birds.

Thank you so much for the pictures and the descriptions of the artwork! What a great place!

More great photos. I thought the cypress knots were green parakeets at first.

First of all, let me say that your photography is superb!

I copied a pic of that first poem, and want to have a copy of it in some medium, some day, in my trailer. It has everything I love in poetry---rhythm, rhyme, and wonderful mental pictures! Blank verse always leaves me cold, as do most other forms of poetry, including Haiku.

And the sculptures are unbelievably fantastic! I have been through many museums in my life, with sculptures galore, and, but for one in the Metropolitan, I have forgotten them all. But these, outside and among the beautiful surroundings, in the various mediums, are totally spectacular. This is most certainly one place I would want to visit one day----so how do I find it? Perhaps you explained how to get there, or where it is, but I need more info, if possible, please.

The graceful otters might be my favorite piece, with Pegasus, one of my most favorite mythological creatures, is a second-place winner. And those life-like dogs, in various poses, looking so real and so as if they belonged there in the outside beauty. This place is SO much more fascinating and beautiful than any inside displays I have ever seen.

I can't thank you enough for sharing this place---I feel as if I should save this entire message to print out when I get a decent printer.

Happy travels!
