Any Excel Geniuses Out There?

I rarely have a need to use Excel, but if I ever had questions, I'd ask my girlfriend who died last year. I don't have her new number, so I can't call. I'm hoping someone here can solve my input problem...

What version and what's your question. I haven't 'worked' in a bit and try not to think much about solving problems. But they used to pay me to do that. Probably won't be any help at all, but try me. I'll be signing off and leaving town in about 20 minutes.
Mitch it's about 12:30 and I am headed to Kerrville to get my car made into a "TOAD" tomorrow. Weather is so awful that I am driving out this afternoon and will spend the night in a motel so I can have it to the shop by 8:00. Temps predicted in the single digits out there at night. Dang that's cold. Will have my laptop and will check back later. I use the 2003 package now, so if it is too new, I'll be lost. I think I still have my Microsoft account and will try that later, too.

Here I go out into the wild cold yonder - this is record breaking stuff in South Central Texas.

Nope. I used to work with some economists who gave me stuff in Excel all the time ... and I didn't dare mess with it. :lol:

So, see the # of servings? Information on the labels is 'per serving". I want to say, go over and put in 180 in the calories column and have it automatically multiply it by # of servings to get the TOTAL calories for the entire package. Same with the rest of the nutrition information columns.

In other words, I don't want 180 in calories. I want 180 x 6, but to have theprogram do it automatically when I type in the 180 there.

Does what I just typed make sense?

no guarantees, but I worked with excel for several years before I retired from The Nature Conservancy. I designed my own finance reports for the Board of Directors....

I suggest this: enter a formula in the cell where you want the total......

=sum(c2xd2)

but you will have to insert another column for total cals

I had tried that and it 'creates a circular reference' or some (sum, get it...) such error message.
Trying to add another column is what I'm trying to avoid.

I guess what I'm needing to learn is how to have an input type form and then have it go insert the totals in the spreadsheet.

Hmmmm...... that's strange. you can have room to add a column by going to landscape presentation. or decreasing your font size. highlight the cell you want it to land in,... and try that again,.... or,.... do a link. usually excel opens three worksheets,... have one where you input and then do a link to the cover sheet where you will just have your totals.

Just a thought, could you have an older version? My Excel '97 instructions say use * not and X in a multiplication formula.

I don't know what version you are using, here in the school lab we have all new computers and i've just been exploring in excel trying to find my old commands. Here you go..... if you want to have two pages, go to your second page,..(tabs at bottom) and enter your servings and calories. Click on your total and hit copy. Go to your first sheet and select the cell you want the info to land in.... hit Paste,... then Paste link. your totals should be automatically linked. Now if you change input on the second sheet the formulas and links will keep things updated.

I have 2003. I got it to work by adding more rows and referenced the totals in the new section and then divided all the information by the 'serving size'. So, now I have a worksheet to figure out the nutrition information for something homemade. I just did it for a loaf of Peasant Bread (it's a Camping DO type of recipe that you don't have to knead). Turned out really purdy...(but I'll definitely cut down, WAY DOWN, on the salt next time!)
