It was mentioned about computer defragging and I realized I hadn't checked for that in probably 6 mons. so I began one. That was at 9 this morning and it is now 12:15 and it is saying it is
only 40% done!! How long should a defrag take?

You might want to double check that EVERYTHING else is closed/shut off, including any screen saver or power saving settings.

About 5% in I did see my anti virus also started doing a full scan and it took me a while to get that cancelled. I set my timer so every 20 mins I go jiggle my mouse so the computer doesn't power down. I
don't use a screen saver. All good ideas. Thanks!

It can take a long time if you haven't done one in a while. Good you caught the antivirus starting - would have taken even longer.

FINALLY after 6 hrs i'm done defragging!! My anti virus kept coming on. I even paused the defrag, started the virus scan and then paused it then unpaused the defrag but then darn virus scan started up again on it's own after about 10 mins!!!! Irked the chit out of me   !!! Thankfully the last 45% of the defrag went very quickl or I'd still be pulling out my hair. So far I haven't seen any change in my computer running any faster. ;)
Ok, done with my whine.....for now...

I have been using the free AVG for about a year. So far so good. The only problem I had was getting their last update installed but finally got it done.

My friend has 2 teenagers using her home computer and they got a virus last week. She thinks it came from either Facebook or My Space. Usually if there is something bad going around it is on the news and I haven't heard of anything.

I'm using Avast now - the free home version - and so far so good! Over the years have used all the big popular names - and all have worked. I'm just into cheap and free right now - also use something called cleanup452 every evening when I power down. It has made defrags pretty quick and dirty - so I suspect it does a lot of that upkeep on a daily basis.

Remember to back up your data - at least once a month if not more often. Tomorrow will be my clean the computer day while they are washing the RV. I have an external drive I back up to and will do defrag etc.

I don't know if this will help anyone, but maybe....I use McAfee & have for many years. It seems to do the job...However, it's expensive in my opinion. Anyway, had to renew this past month & even on sale, it was more than I wanted to spend....so I went to a website called:
fatwallet.com I found the 3 user McAfee 2010 version for $14.00....With tax (no shipping fee was charged)...it cost me just under $16.00. I received it about 2 weeks later & am perfectly satisfied. New box, never opened, etc.,etc. For those of you wanting to save some dollars, especially if you're either in your stick house or RVing where you'll be a while, this is a great website...you might try checking it out...
Hope this helps some of you !!!!

Good info, Carol. I bought an external hard drive and save my pictures and back up my Quicken accounts to it.

And Excel, thanks for the website. :D

Had to get a new 'pooter yesterday as my old (over 10 years) Toshiba gave up the ghost and went to computer heaven, so did some research on free antivirus. Have used AVG for quite a while, but read what Karen had to say and found this...also installed the malwarebytes program.
